Share a story of one of your best experiences in Asia, or tell us about a place you love.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>really? you&#8217;re going to make me choose? i&#8217;ve only recently started traveling to Asia (other than a couple trips to Hong Kong growing up, as that&#8217;s where my parents are from): <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/sets\/72157624422993620\/\" target=\"_blank\">Beijing\/Great Wall in 2010<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/sets\/72157627335438635\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Angkor Region of Cambodia last August<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/sets\/72157628396462083\/\" target=\"_blank\">Japan in November<\/a>. each of those alone was amazing, and i&#8217;m not sure i can pick just one to highlight, especially since my options are limited and those destinations were chosen with the intent of having stories to tell.<\/p>\n<p>there are three places, though, that i could spend countless hours in:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bayon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>all y&#8217;all must get tired of me talking about this, but this is my favorite <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bayon\" target=\"_blank\">temple<\/a> in the Angkor area. it&#8217;s like being surrounded by a couple hundred <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Face_of_Boe\" target=\"_blank\">Faces of Boe<\/a>, but a lot less creepy. in fact, there&#8217;s this serene benevolence that adds a palpable sense of mysticism to what otherwise would be &#8220;any ol'&#8221; Angkor temple.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/6054643955\/in\/set-72157627335438635\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/farm7.staticflickr.com\/6090\/6054643955_df70a9125e_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bayon<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hakone<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>i did the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.japan-guide.com\/e\/e5210.html\" target=\"_blank\">Hakone Round Course<\/a> as an overnight trip on my way from Tokyo to Kyoto. i am not sure what it was &#8212; the funicular, the ropeway with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/6502975381\/in\/set-72157628396462083\" target=\"_blank\">soaring views of Mount Fuji<\/a>, the steaming mountainside of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/6502959913\/in\/set-72157628396462083\" target=\"_blank\">Owakudani<\/a> (eat those <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/6502961297\/in\/set-72157628396462083\" target=\"_blank\">black eggs<\/a>!), the breathtaking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/6502942971\/in\/set-72157628396462083\" target=\"_blank\">Open Air Museum<\/a> filled with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/6502942971\/in\/set-72157628396462083\" target=\"_blank\">modern sculpture<\/a>, or the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/6502984289\/in\/set-72157628396462083\" target=\"_blank\">pirate ship ride<\/a> across Lake Ashinoko &#8212; my first impression of Japanese countryside and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/6502949079\/in\/set-72157628396462083\" target=\"_blank\">fall foliage<\/a> after being in the urban jungle of Tokyo was absolutely breathtaking.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>PROTIP: if you want a treat, take advantage of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fujiyahotel.jp\/english\/stay_plan_130th.html\" target=\"_blank\">Fujiya Hotel&#8217;s Special Hospitality Plan<\/a> for non-Japanese passport holders. they have a very small (5?) number of rooms set aside for just $133 per night (based on the number of years the hotel has been in existence, so it will change annually). not only do you get to spend the night in a historic grand hotel, but a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/6502972119\/in\/set-72157628396462083\" target=\"_blank\">morning walk in their Japanese garden<\/a> is a great way to start your day. also, they had the most amazingly fast (free) in-room internet. even up in the middle-of-nowhere-mountains i got speeds faster than i could ever get at home.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/6502978739\/in\/set-72157628396462083\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7001\/6502978739_21a0fb2358_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">From Owakudani to Ubako, Mt. Fuji in the distance<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/6502965311\/in\/set-72157628396462083\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7144\/6502965311_95dce51749_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of a handful of stray kitty cats I saw near the lake<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Okunoin Graveyard and Torodo Hall, Koyasan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>walking the two-kilometer path through the forest cemetery (the largest cemetery in Japan) during the day and again at night are two <a href=\"http:\/\/www.japan-guide.com\/e\/e4901.html\" target=\"_blank\">soul-moving pilgrimages<\/a>. midday, being surrounded by 200,000 tombstones amongst towering grand old trees filtering the sunlight, finally reaching the Hall of Lamps (after passing through many clearly-significant religious sites and devout adherents paying their respects), your heart is filled with awe. at night (be sure to go once during the daytime beforehand so you&#8217;re not caught by surprise at the length of the trek), with dim lights illuminating the path every now and then, you&#8217;re not filled with dread and fear as much as you are with a sense of reverence and somewhat otherworldly spirituality. combined, it is possibly the closest this devout atheist could ever say he has felt to a religious experience in his life. if you go, definitely stay overnight at a temple: lodging like no other where they serve you <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/6503139373\/in\/set-72157628396462083\" target=\"_blank\">food like no other<\/a>\u00a0(quite yummy)!<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/6503116873\/in\/set-72157628396462083\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7169\/6503116873_552cd4ce71_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The cemetery<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/6503118781\/in\/set-72157628396462083\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7026\/6503118781_1a7f73c344_z.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">An old mausoleum<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>part of the BootsnAll Indie Travel Challenge Project If you\u2019ve traveled in Asia, what\u2019s your favorite destination?
