{"id":2821,"date":"2013-04-28T17:18:21","date_gmt":"2013-04-29T00:18:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jett.in\/?p=2821"},"modified":"2014-05-30T19:31:53","modified_gmt":"2014-05-31T02:31:53","slug":"conquering-the-abandoned-pennsylvania-turnpikes-sideling-hill-tunnel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2013\/04\/conquering-the-abandoned-pennsylvania-turnpikes-sideling-hill-tunnel\/","title":{"rendered":"Conquering The Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike&#8217;s Sideling Hill Tunnel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>you may recall <a href=\"http:\/\/jett.in\/the-abandoned-pennsylvania-turnpike-and-the-spooky-tunnel\/\">a year ago i attempted to walk through<\/a> Sideling Hill Tunnel, part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abandoned_Pennsylvania_Turnpike\">Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike<\/a>, but chickened out without getting very far in. well, i decided to finally conquer it. i came armed with a (much) stronger flashlight and some music to keep me company.<\/p>\n<p>i&#8217;ve <a href=\"https:\/\/mapsengine.google.com\/map\/edit?mid=zrbcUliE3938.kgteMkO07VvI\">updated the map<\/a> from last year&#8217;s entry to cover what i&#8217;ve discovered. also, all <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/sets\/72157633373066602\/\">the pictures i took (much more than what&#8217;s below) are on flickr<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"Untitled by jon|k, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/8690388532\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Untitled\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7051\/8690388532_6b29b22c58_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The west entrance still looks pretty much the same<\/p><\/div>\n<p>there were significantly more people this time around. i don&#8217;t know if word spread or i just came at the wrong\/right time, but when i got up to the turnpike from the trail from the parking spot, there was a senior citizen hiking group (ok, just in case, maybe a 50+ hiking group?) milling about. (i heard one of them tell another he got into an accident right there at the west entrance to the tunnel. pretty cool to hear about when that stretch of the turnpike was still in use!) they were just leaving, so i&#8217;m not sure if they went all the way through the tunnel or not. some people had head lamps but others didn&#8217;t. while i normally like exploring in solitude, i&#8217;m glad they were there because now i <em>really<\/em> had to go through with it! i couldn&#8217;t let these people think i was a wuss!<\/p>\n<p>and so i did. i popped my earphones in, turned my flashlight on, and headed in, heart pounding.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"Untitled by jon|k, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/8689271043\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Untitled\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8398\/8689271043_30aedffb69_z.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">(In all fairness, the flashlight did quite well &#8212; not just a teeny spot like you&#8217;d think from this picture.)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>once i got maybe 1\/3 of the way in, i saw a light ahead, which i assumed was another group. i was glad a) i wasn&#8217;t alone, and b) they were ahead of me so i couldn&#8217;t be startled from behind. as i kept walking, though, i discovered it literally was the light at the end of the tunnel, at which point fear started to creep in because i realized i <em>was<\/em> alone in the dark.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Untitled by jon|k, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/8689273429\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Untitled\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7049\/8689273429_08d7fe1d20_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>BUT I MADE IT! it took me nearly 20 minutes (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/8689274115\/in\/set-72157633373066602\">19 minutes and 53 seconds<\/a>, to be exact; <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sideling_Hill_Tunnel\">wikipedia<\/a> says it&#8217;s about 1.28 miles long) of quite brisk walking, though it didn&#8217;t seem like that long, luckily. also, i didn&#8217;t know what to expect, but suffice it to say there weren&#8217;t tree roots coming in and water everywhere, or bats or rats or even vegetation of any sort.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"Untitled by jon|k, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/8689274747\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Untitled\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7052\/8689274747_701f6d5ff2_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The east end looks a lot like the west end<\/p><\/div>\n<p>(not sure why this photosynth came out with some funny colors, but&#8230;)<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"Untitled by jon|k, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/8690415486\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Untitled\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7044\/8690415486_ebdc5c64eb_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"143\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Panorama &#8212; you can see the east end of the tunnel in the distance on the right<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a title=\"Yesss. (which is not continually flooded like the west side, so you can at least explore this a bit more).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"Untitled by jon|k, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/8689315527\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Untitled\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7050\/8689315527_9186a38e3e_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Halfway up the embankment<\/p><\/div>\n<p>i am so glad i did! i love abandoned machinery, and what was up there but two giant fans that provided ventilation for the tunnel.
