{"id":3539,"date":"2013-09-01T20:15:21","date_gmt":"2013-09-02T03:15:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jett.in\/?p=3539"},"modified":"2013-09-01T20:15:21","modified_gmt":"2013-09-02T03:15:21","slug":"gold-rush-tracing-my-great-grandparents-to-the-land-of-the-mother-lode","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2013\/09\/gold-rush-tracing-my-great-grandparents-to-the-land-of-the-mother-lode\/","title":{"rendered":"(G)Old Rush &#8212; Tracing My Great-Grandparents to The Land of the Mother Lode"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_3551\" style=\"width: 284px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mapsengine.google.com\/map\/edit?mid=zrbcUliE3938.kM8E54I1qvUs\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3551\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3551\" alt=\"Green = Grass Valley, Red = Jackson\" src=\"http:\/\/jett.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/map-274x300.png\" width=\"274\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2013\/09\/map-274x300.png 274w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2013\/09\/map.png 401w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 274px) 100vw, 274px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3551\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Green = Grass Valley, Red = Jackson<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>a short (family) history lesson<\/h3>\n<p>for the longest time i remember my maternal grandfather saying his parents lived in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grass_Valley,_California\">Grass Valley<\/a>\u00a0(aka\u00a0<em>Glass Valley<\/em> as he said it with his accent), California in the early part of the twentieth century (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/History_of_Chinese_Americans#First_wave_.2819th_century_to_1949.29:_the_beginning_of_the_Chinese_immigration\">first wave of Chinese immigrants<\/a>). as a young kid i had it in my mind they owned a gold mine, but later i learned they (much more realistically, lol) had a restaurant and did fairly well for themselves serving the people working in the large mines near the city.<\/p>\n<p>cut to about a year ago when i gave\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ancestry.com\/\">ancestry.com<\/a> a whirl (i signed up for their free trial, did all my research, then canceled; no shame in my game). <em>i found a record of them in the 1920 census!<\/em> i don&#8217;t know the full details of how they got these particular names (mom explained it to me once), but even though they were really <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chan_(surname)\">Chans<\/a>, they used the last name &#8220;Moon&#8221; when they emigrated from Hong Kong (or China, mom&#8217;s not sure), coming over as a so-called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfmuseum.net\/hist11\/papersons.html\">paper son<\/a>&#8221; (and wife?).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jett.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/The-Moons-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3541\" alt=\"The Moons (1)\" src=\"http:\/\/jett.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/The-Moons-1-700x473.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"473\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>if i&#8217;m reading this census form correctly, it says that as of January 1, 1920:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Henry Moon&#8221; (my great-grandfather) and his wife &#8220;Fong&#8221; (my great-grandmother) were living in a rented place at 4 Main Street, Jackson City, Amador County, California<\/li>\n<li>he was 27, she was 24<\/li>\n<li>he came to the United States in 1908, she came in 1906 (mom says he came over before she did, so either the dates got mixed up or they were flat-out lies)<\/li>\n<li>they were &#8220;aliens&#8221; &#8212; not naturalized citizens<\/li>\n<li>they were not attending school<\/li>\n<li>they could read and write (unspecified language, though)<\/li>\n<li>they were both born in China and both spoke Chinese as their mother tongue, as did their parents<\/li>\n<li>they were both able to speak English (though either my great-grandmother forgot a lot by the time i was born 57 years later or enumerator <a href=\"http:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/cgi-bin\/fg.cgi?page=gr&amp;GRid=87693180\">Mrs. Catherine M. Garbarini<\/a>* was very lenient with her standards)<\/li>\n<li>he was a cook at a restaurant, she was a helper at a restaurant (i would assume the same one)<\/li>\n<li>he was &#8220;working on own account&#8221;, which i gather is old-timey speak for self-employed, she was a &#8220;wage worker&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>* the Garbarinis seem to be quite the prominent Jackson family. i found out a Virgilio Garbarini was the town&#8217;s first mayor. without going too far off track, though, i can&#8217;t be 100% sure <a href=\"http:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/cgi-bin\/fg.cgi?page=gr&amp;GRid=87693180\">Catherine<\/a> was related to Virgilio (who was married to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/cgi-bin\/fg.cgi?page=gr&amp;GRid=87988829\">Katherine<\/a>), but what are the chances &#8212; sounds like a dynasty to me.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3556\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jett.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/familytree.png\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3556\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3556\" alt=\"Simplified family tree (siblings not shown)\" src=\"http:\/\/jett.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/familytree-700x450.png\" width=\"700\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3556\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Simplified family tree (siblings not shown)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>while we are sure they lived in Grass Valley (some 80 miles to the north via current roads) at some point, their being in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jackson,_CA\">Jackson<\/a> at this time jives with my mom remembering hearing stories about a big fire, which would be the 1922 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Argonaut_Mine\">Argonaut Mine<\/a> fire, the worst gold-mining disaster in US history, according to some accounts. in addition to this whole restauranting thing, my great-grandmother once told me she worked for <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PG&amp;E\">Pacific Gas &amp; Electric<\/a>, the Northern California utility company that still exists to this day. i&#8217;m sure there was more to this story, but my Cantonese was (is) really bad and she spoke <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taishanese\">Toisanese<\/a>, which made it even worse. (i remember mostly just nodding along.)<\/p>\n<p>mom tells me they returned soon after the fire and in short time adopted who would turn out to be my grandfather (as curious as i am, as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikiquote.org\/wiki\/Minority_Report_(film)#Others\">someone once said<\/a>, &#8216;you dig up the past, all you get is dirty&#8217;).<\/p>\n<p>this is a picture of my great-grandparents (and other relatives). given the age of my aunt, i can surmise this picture was taken in the late 1940s in Hong Kong. i never met great-grandfather; my mom and her sisters (no brothers, just 6 girls!) and my grandparents came over in 1966; my great-grandmother came over after her husband passed away.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3560\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jett.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/992.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3560\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3560\" alt=\"f\" src=\"http:\/\/jett.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/992-700x490.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"490\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3560\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Trying not to be too confusing\/confused; relationships are relative to me. (bold indicates people i&#8217;ve met):<br \/>First group of three: <strong>grandmother Lucille<\/strong> (mom&#8217;s mom), <em><strong>great-grandmother<\/strong><\/em> (&#8220;Fong Moon&#8221;, seated), <strong>aunt Diana<\/strong> (mom&#8217;s older sister).<br \/>Second group of three: Great-aunt(?) and two of her children<br \/>Third group of three: Great-grandfather&#8217;s stepmom, <strong>daughter of previously-mentioned great-aunt\u00a0<\/strong>(only met once or twice; she ran a market in Oakland Chinatown), <strong>grandfather William<\/strong> (mom&#8217;s dad, the son of &#8220;Henry and Fong Moon&#8221;)<br \/>Fourth group of three: great-uncle, <em>great-grandfather<\/em> (&#8220;Henry Moon&#8221;, in chair), <strong>great-uncle Ben<\/strong> (and his dog, which my mom remembers as being big and scary)<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>jackson city<\/h3>\n<p>the great thing about gold rush\/wild west towns in this neck of the woods is that for some reason, whether for tourism or posterity or both or neither, they are well-preserved. what i wasn&#8217;t expecting, though, was a full-on historic district!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jett.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/P9015125.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3563\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/jett.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/P9015125-700x525.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>while we knew the address, we didn&#8217;t really know exactly where it was (mapping fail on my part). we just parked towards the end of Main hoping to find some sort of indication when i stepped out the door and what did i see?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jett.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/P9015085.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3564\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/jett.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/P9015085-525x700.jpg\" width=\"525\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>as it turns out, as i&#8217;m looking now at a walking tour pamphlet i got down the street at the National Hotel, the &#8220;No. 4&#8221; is NOT the house number, but the plaque number (*eyeroll*). so nope, that wasn&#8217;t it (even though we thought it was the entire time, misreading the plaque as indicating a historic street numbering! lol).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3566\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jett.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/P9015089.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3566\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3566\" alt=\"Looking south on Main Street from Number 4,\" src=\"http:\/\/jett.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/P9015089-700x525.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3566\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Looking south on Main Street from the impostor &#8220;Number 4&#8221;.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>according to the pamphlet, now that i&#8217;m looking at it carefully, the real number 4 was actually right across the street &#8212; and i&#8217;m glad i have \u00a0pictures of it!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3567\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jett.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/P9015096.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3567\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3567\" alt=\"The real Number 4 from the National Hotel\" src=\"http:\/\/jett.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/P9015096-700x525.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3567\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The real Number 4, taken from the National Hotel<\/p><\/div>\n<p>the pamphlet states that the Union House Hotel occupied numbers 4-14 Main (with an <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Independent_Order_of_Odd_Fellows\">IOOF<\/a> lodge being the top story, added in 1904). so, i guess they were long-term residents at the hotel? or maybe short-term? was it an <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Single_room_occupancy\">SRO<\/a>? (the census page indicates quite a number of families living in 4-14.) currently #4 is &#8220;Fat Freddy&#8217;s Hot Dogs and Polish Sausages&#8221;, heh.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3568\" style=\"width: 535px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jett.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/P9015091.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3568\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3568\" alt=\"Man, am I glad I was playing tourist and snapped a whole bunch of photos! \" src=\"http:\/\/jett.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/P9015091-525x700.jpg\" width=\"525\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3568\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Man, am I glad I was playing tourist and snapped a whole bunch of photos! We weren&#8217;t really interested in this building since we didn&#8217;t think it was the one we wanted, but I took this just because of the historical significance. (by the way, <a href=\"http:\/\/ci.jackson.ca.us\/KennedyTailingWheelsPark\/kennedy_wheels.html\">these wheels were used<\/a> to lift mine waste over the hills to a dumping site.)<\/p>\n<h3>in closing<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_3574\" style=\"width: 698px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jett.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/C50.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3574\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3574\" alt=\"My grandparents and great-grandmother (&quot;Fong Moon&quot;) some time in the '80s.
