&#8212; Abandoned Summer Camp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>again, the Pennsylvania\/New Jersey area does not fail when it comes to my pursuit of <a href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/category\/abandoned-2\">abandonment<\/a>. a handful of instagram pictures cannot do it justice, so i&#8217;m prefacing it with some panoramas &#8212; also see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/sets\/72157636730749705\">my full flickr set<\/a> for even more photos, including many more indoor shots.<\/p>\n<p>i&#8217;m surprised this place is not more famous (as far as i can tell) in urban-exploration circles, but that&#8217;s just fine with me. the camp was, research shows (not linked in order to keep some secrecy about it), founded by the man who made a fortune with a little game called &#8220;Skee-Ball&#8221; (perhaps you&#8217;re familiar? :D) and started out in the 1920s as a nonsectarian camp for underprivileged kids but with specific allowances for Jewish children such as a separate kosher kitchen. one of these Jewish children was none other than Mel Brooks! it seems to have continued in that vein until some time in the early 2000s (when the camp was still active &#8212; you can see posters and receipts and hourly wage logs from then) when it turned into a short-lived baseball-themed camp which explains the uniforms alt=\"Untitled\" width=\"640\" height=\"186\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>it really did bring back memories of summer camps when i was a kid &#8212; school camps and church camps and band camps and Boy Scout this and thats (though we were in tents, ugh), especially since everything was there: the cabins, the lake, athletic fields, a gym, a stage (i almost broke out into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=l9BbUqHrWFI\">a scene from Dirty Dancing<\/a>)&#8230;really a cool spot that, while i was so excited to explore, am a bit sad that it&#8217;s no longer
