{"id":4190,"date":"2013-11-25T23:38:53","date_gmt":"2013-11-26T07:38:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/?p=4190"},"modified":"2013-11-25T23:38:53","modified_gmt":"2013-11-26T07:38:53","slug":"instawalk-geylang-singapore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2013\/11\/instawalk-geylang-singapore\/","title":{"rendered":"Instawalk: Geylang, Singapore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>i&#8217;m going to be honest here: i didn&#8217;t know what to expect of Singapore before i got here, and even now, two days later, i don&#8217;t think i fully know what it&#8217;s all about. i expected a sleek, clean, futuristic metropolis &#8212; and while that&#8217;s definitely <a href=\"https:\/\/foursquare.com\/jonk\/checkin\/529437ed498e1ae443e97c72\">here<\/a>, there&#8217;s so much more. for example, the colonial architecture is amazing; if i had a few more days i&#8217;d love to go on a guided tour with a historian. there&#8217;s also the less-frequented parts like <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Geylang\">Geylang<\/a>, which i read about this morning when trying to decide what to do. and it sounded perfect for a visit.<\/p>\n<p>described in the same breath as the city&#8217;s new red-light district and the location of some of the best food around, it&#8217;s pretty much ungentrified Singapore. (which is great, since <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jonk\/status\/405225420066283520\">where i am staying<\/a> seems pretty much like a Disney development.)<\/p>\n<p>i found a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.expatliving.sg\/article\/wine-dine\/local-food\/foodwalker-in-the-heart-of-geylang\">walking tour (one of two, actually) on Expat Living<\/a>&nbsp;and headed out. the following href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hokkien_mee#Hokkien_Char_Mee\">hokkien char mee<\/a>. both were amazingly delicious. whatever you do, though, do NOT look up cordyceps in Wikipedia, now or
