{"id":4279,"date":"2013-12-16T18:11:20","date_gmt":"2013-12-17T02:11:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/?p=4279"},"modified":"2013-12-17T16:46:56","modified_gmt":"2013-12-18T00:46:56","slug":"2013-travel-retrospective","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2013\/12\/2013-travel-retrospective\/","title":{"rendered":"2013: A Travel Retrospective"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>a short aside before we begin: <\/strong>2013 was the first year i really started to embrace travel as a lifestyle &#8212; or well, at least as much as i have been able to, and i&#8217;m so grateful for it. rarely a day passes that i don&#8217;t reflect on how fortunate i have been to have seen as much of the world as i have been able to.<\/p>\n<h3>achievements<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>flew on the A380 five times this year: 2x Air France, 1x Singapore, 1x Thai, 1x Lufthansa. i don&#8217;t have a favorite airplane, but if i did, it would likely be this.<\/li>\n<li>finally crossed the sole aviation-related item off my list, <a title=\"Kawaii Overload: EVA Airways Hello Kitty Jet x 2, Business Class\" href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2013\/11\/24\/kawaii-overload-eva-airways-hello-kitty-jet-x-2-business-class\/\">Hello Kitty<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>i started my <a href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/category\/shower-review\/\">lounge shower review series<\/a> and wrote 21 of &#8217;em so far.<\/li>\n<li>according to my records, i flew 189,431 miles this year, significantly more than any year previous:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gcmap.com\/mapui?P=VIE-FRA-SFO,SFO-IAH-PHL,PHL-IAD-SFO,SFO-IAD-DXB-DOH,DOH-DXB,DXB-IAD-IAH-SFO,OAK-LAX-LIM,LIM-GRU,GRU-SCL,SCL-GIG,GIG-GRU-ORD-SFO,OAK-ONT,ONT-OAK,SFO-SEA-NRT-SGN,SGN-NRT-SFO,OAK-PHX-PHL,PHL-PHX-SJC,SFO-CPH-BGO,BGO-RIX,RIX-CPH,CPH-SFO,SFO-BOS-PHL,PHL-PHX-SFO,SJC-NRT-BKK,BKK-PEK-ULN,ULN-PEK-HND,NRT-LAX-SJC,SFO-ORD-MUC-BUD,BUD-FRA-ORD-DFW-SFO,SFO-ANC,ANC-SFO,SFO-IAD-CDG-LED,LED-CDG-IAD-SFO,SFO-TPE-KUL-PEN,PEN-BKK-HKG,HKG-SFO,SFO-IAD-PHL,PHL-IAH-SFO,SFO-TPE-ICN-SIN,SIN-RGN,RGN-NYU,NYU-RGN,RGN-NRT-SFO,SFO-IAD-PHL,PHL-IAH-SFO\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gcmap.com\/map?P=VIE-FRA-SFO,SFO-IAH-PHL,PHL-IAD-SFO,SFO-IAD-DXB-DOH,DOH-DXB,DXB-IAD-IAH-SFO,OAK-LAX-LIM,LIM-GRU,GRU-SCL,SCL-GIG,GIG-GRU-ORD-SFO,OAK-ONT,ONT-OAK,SFO-SEA-NRT-SGN,SGN-NRT-SFO,OAK-PHX-PHL,PHL-PHX-SJC,SFO-CPH-BGO,BGO-RIX,RIX-CPH,CPH-SFO,SFO-BOS-PHL,PHL-PHX-SFO,SJC-NRT-BKK,BKK-PEK-ULN,ULN-PEK-HND,NRT-LAX-SJC,SFO-ORD-MUC-BUD,BUD-FRA-ORD-DFW-SFO,SFO-ANC,ANC-SFO,SFO-IAD-CDG-LED,LED-CDG-IAD-SFO,SFO-TPE-KUL-PEN,PEN-BKK-HKG,HKG-SFO,SFO-IAD-PHL,PHL-IAH-SFO,SFO-TPE-ICN-SIN,SIN-RGN,RGN-NYU,NYU-RGN,RGN-NRT-SFO,SFO-IAD-PHL,PHL-IAH-SFO&amp;MS=wls&amp;MR=1800&amp;MX=720x360&amp;PM=*\" width=\"720\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>my longest flight was Dulles to Dubai, 7,069 miles (about 13 hours) which i did <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jonk\/statuses\/302922870076608513\">in a middle seat<\/a> (somehow got switched at the gate; at least it was economy plus? &#8212; luckily the return was in an exit row aisle)<\/li>\n<li>my shortest flight was Dulles to Philly (3x this year), 135 miles.<\/li>\n<li>according to <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.facebook.com\/tripadvisortravelmap\/?fb_source=fbpage\">the tripadvisor facebook app<\/a> i use, i&#8217;ve passed the 50-country mark (50 was Singapore, 51 was Myanmar). note that if you use it and your number comes out lower than you expect, it&#8217;s because it counts England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland all as one country, the United Kingdom (<a href=\"http:\/\/geography.about.com\/od\/politicalgeography\/a\/scotlandnot.htm\">which makes sense<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>a brief word on United PQD<\/h3>\n<p>for me, the 2013 development that will have the most impact was the announcement that United will be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mileageplusupdates.com\/\">instituting a minimum spend<\/a> for their elite tiers in addition to the amount of miles flown. i can&#8217;t say i was completely taken by surprise, just saddened they chose to do it right as my flying was really picking up (this will likely be the only year i ever <a title=\"I Just Made United 1K. Now What?\" href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2013\/10\/26\/just-made-united-1k-now\/\">make United 1K<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>that said, i totally get their side of the story.<\/p>\n<p>they are making a business decision: they want more money. i&#8217;m making a business decision: <a title=\"Peeping at United PQDs\" href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2013\/11\/19\/peeping-united-pqds\/\">i only fly when it&#8217;s cheap<\/a> and i want to save money. they are valuing me less as a customer, i&#8217;m valuing them less as a business. as i&#8217;ve said before, no hard feelings. <em>see ya&#8217;!<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>but first, the food<\/h3>\n<p>i&#8217;ve singled out three of my favorite food experiences from this year (tough, since y&#8217;all know how much i love to eat!):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zaatar\">zaatar<\/a> in Qatar:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" width=\"500\">\n<p>Whaaa so yummy!
