{"id":4357,"date":"2013-12-21T12:48:37","date_gmt":"2013-12-21T20:48:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/?p=4357"},"modified":"2013-12-21T19:46:26","modified_gmt":"2013-12-22T03:46:26","slug":"save-money-travel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2013\/12\/save-money-travel\/","title":{"rendered":"Money Money Money, It&#8217;s Not a Rich Man&#8217;s World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>i recently commented on <a href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/milenomics\/making-the-most-of-your-cash-while-traveling\/\">a post by Milenomics<\/a> (who, by the way, is perhaps the best voice of reason when it comes to the miles and points game &#8212; well worth your time to follow) about saving money on your travels, and i realized that <a title=\"Budget\" href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2011\/11\/18\/budgetpart-of-the-30-days-of-indie-travel-projectim-a-pretty-cheap-traveler-i-mean-lets-face-it-if-youre-just-a-regular-joe-or-in-my-case-a-regular-jon-and-like-to-travel-as-much-as-i-do-you-cant-have\/\">my blog post on this topic<\/a> is over two years old and way overdue for a revisit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/files\/2013\/12\/photo-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4359\" alt=\"photo-(1)\" src=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/files\/2013\/12\/photo-1.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2013\/12\/photo-1.jpg 600w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2013\/12\/photo-1-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2013\/12\/photo-1-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>much of what i said in 2011 still holds true, but i&#8217;ve really ramped up my travel <a title=\"A Look Back at 2012\" href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2012\/12\/31\/a-look-back-at-2012\/\">since<\/a> <a title=\"2013: A Travel Retrospective\" href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2013\/12\/16\/2013-travel-retrospective\/\">then<\/a>\u00a0which not only means more experience but also a greater demand for frugality (since i don&#8217;t, you know, have a money tree).<\/p>\n<p>so here goes &#8212; the way i travel without breaking the bank. (note that i am not into the manufactured spend and cards thing, so i&#8217;ll save all that <a href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/\">for the experts<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<h3>be flexible &#8212; go where it&#8217;s cheap<\/h3>\n<p>while this is not an option for everyone, i&#8217;ve found that it&#8217;s saved me the most money and allowed me to really get out there. put simply, i let the price dictate the destination.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/files\/2013\/12\/Untitled3.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4361 aligncenter\" alt=\"Untitled\" src=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/files\/2013\/12\/Untitled3.png\" width=\"488\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2013\/12\/Untitled3.png 488w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2013\/12\/Untitled3-300x173.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 488px) 100vw, 488px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>thanks to the folks at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theflightdeal.com\">The Flight Deal<\/a>, i&#8217;m alerted to fare sales and mistakes, meaning, say, i was able to fly to South America this year for around $400, about the same to Russia, and next year i&#8217;m taking advantage of a mistake fare from Mexico City to Buenos Aires for about $150.<\/p>\n<p>if you&#8217;re using award miles, be sure to be flexible with your dates and maybe even your destination so you can redeem for the lowest level. this is when it helps to plan early &#8212; check for seats as soon as the booking window opens and keep checking if you don&#8217;t see anything. <a href=\"http:\/\/boardingarea.com\/viewfromthewing\/2011\/09\/05\/the-myth-of-booking-award-tickets-at-midnight-330-days-out\/\">Gary Leff has thoughts on this.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>in the same vein, award redemptions are great for aspirational travel &#8212; getting to go places and on certain flights that would be expensive or otherwise not easy to obtain, like when i did <a title=\"Kawaii Overload: EVA Airways Hello Kitty Jet x 2, Business Class\" href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2013\/11\/24\/kawaii-overload-eva-airways-hello-kitty-jet-x-2-business-class\/\">two Hello Kitty flights<\/a> back-to-back in business class. this is probably my main reason for sticking with an airline\/alliance and wanting elite status (so those miles rack up faster, especially since i don&#8217;t do the points game).<\/p>\n<h3>live like a local &#8212; stay where it&#8217;s cheap<\/h3>\n<p>while there are times when i stay in a hotel (e.g., it&#8217;s convenient for an airport overnight, or i need a visa support letter [Russia]), for the most part, i&#8217;m a devoted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airbnb.com\/\">Airbnb<\/a> user. it&#8217;s usually cheaper than a hotel and you get much more for your travel dollar. much more space, free internet, washing machines, a kitchen, and way more local color than you&#8217;ll find at a hotel have made me a fan.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4362\" style=\"width: 635px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/files\/2013\/12\/photo-3.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4362\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4362\" alt=\"The main portion of my Airbnb in Singapore. There was a large bedroom with a king-size bed and ginormous bathroom beyond the wall. You definitely couldn&#8217;t get this at a hotel for how much I paid.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>apartment rentals especially make sense when there are multiple people in your party. instead of getting separate hotel rooms which can really add up, get a single large apartment with multiple bedrooms and save save save &#8212; assuming you can stand everyone in such close proximity ;). (i almost always travel with just a rollaboard.)<\/p>\n<h3>if you need\/want to be connected, get a local SIM card<\/h3>\n<p>yep, i&#8217;m a social media addict and i need to be connected to work email as well. so i forget roaming plans with their crazy overage charges and use my phone with a <a title=\"International Roaming (not a pun) and Local SIMs\" href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2012\/02\/14\/international-roaming-not-a-pun-and-local-sims\/\">local SIM card<\/a>. note this really only applies if you have an unlocked GSM phone, or a CDMA (aka Verizon or Sprint) phone with GSM capabilities. something to note is that all Verizon iPhones are unlocked by default so you can use any SIM card in them.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/prepaidwithdata.wikia.com\/wiki\/Prepaid_SIM_with_data\">use this wiki<\/a> to determine local SIM options, including prices and purchase locations.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" width=\"500\">\n<p>With O2, 400 MB of 3G for 50 cents a day, SIM card with over \u20ac1 of credit was \u20ac3,50. is it public transportation? walking? cab? <a title=\"Hamburg\u2019s StadtRAD is rad!\" href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2012\/08\/29\/hamburgs-stadtrad-is-rad\/\">bikeshare<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714;font-size: 1rem\">if by public transportation (my favorite, by the way, since you&#8217;re then integrated into the fabric of your destination), are there multi-day or even a weeklong pass that might save you some money? where can you buy these passes? some transit systems offer discounts if you use a reloadable card versus paying fares individually.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>if by cab, how much should a trip, say, from the airport to the city center cost? for these, i usually rely on Wikitravel and the &#8220;Get Around&#8221; section for each destination city, like <a href=\"http:\/\/wikitravel.org\/en\/Yangon#Get_around\">this one for Yangon<\/a>. you can then budget a bit better and you&#8217;ll be an informed traveler who is less likely to be taken advantage of.<\/p>\n<p>if you&#8217;re traveling by rail and can commit to a certain train at a certain date and time, there are often discounts for buying tickets in advance directly from the rail company, like Deutsche Bahn&#8217;s\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bahn.com\/i\/view\/DEU\/en\/prices\/germany\/savings-fare.shtml\">Sparpreis<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>or Taiwan High Speed Rail&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www5.thsrc.com.tw\/en\/ticket\/tic_earlybird.asp\">Early Bird<\/a> tickets. yes, sometimes it literally does pay to investigate your options!<\/p>\n<p><strong>food<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>especially if you don&#8217;t have access to a kitchen (ahem, AirBnB!), don&#8217;t just hop in the first restaurant you see (or, yikes, one of those with the people in front trying to call you in for a meal). the best way i have found to eat well and on a budget is by using review sites like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foursquare.com\">Foursquare<\/a>\u00a0(my favorite) or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yelp.com\">Yelp<\/a>\u00a0(if available for your destination)\u00a0or even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\">TripAdvisor<\/a>. you can filter by how much you want to spend and proximity to you or your plan for the day. of course, it&#8217;s easiest if you have a working smartphone (ahem, local SIM!) so you can check while on the go, but otherwise at least look into options before you leave or when you&#8217;re planning the next day&#8217;s travel.<\/p>\n<p>my favorite? (or, closed?) do you qualify for discounts that you need to sort out beforehand &#8212; like AAA or an ISIC (student) card?
