{"id":4424,"date":"2014-01-07T23:31:27","date_gmt":"2014-01-08T07:31:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/?p=4424"},"modified":"2014-01-07T23:40:31","modified_gmt":"2014-01-08T07:40:31","slug":"sochi-2014-olympics-what-i-am-and-am-not-worried-about","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2014\/01\/sochi-2014-olympics-what-i-am-and-am-not-worried-about\/","title":{"rendered":"Sochi 2014: What I Am and Am Not Worried About"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>as i&#8217;ve been talking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/jonk\">on the Twitters<\/a> about going next month to the Winter Olympics, several people have brought up fears for my safety as a member of the LGBT community.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4425\" alt=\"img008\" src=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/files\/2014\/01\/img008.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/01\/img008.jpg 600w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/01\/img008-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/01\/img008-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/01\/img008-400x400.jpg 400w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/01\/img008-200x200.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>that actually is not high on my list of concerns.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>while i&#8217;m <a title=\"In Which I Give It the Ol\u2019 College Try in an Attempt to Stick It to the Man\" href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2013\/09\/21\/give-ol-college-try-attempt-stick-man\/\">definitely not a fan of their anti-gay laws<\/a>, i did just fine <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/sets\/72157636445658795\/\">in St. Petersburg last September<\/a>\u00a0and i figure as long as i don&#8217;t go around waving a rainbow flag i should be ok.<\/p>\n<p>here&#8217;s what i\u00a0<em>am<\/em>\u00a0worried about, though:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>terrorist attacks and overbearing security\u00a0<\/strong>given <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Volgograd_bombings\">what happened in Volgograd last week<\/a>, i fear an <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Centennial_Olympic_Park_bombing\">Atlanta-esque event<\/a>\u00a0happening and\/or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2014\/jan\/07\/putin-olympic-security-volgograd-sochi\">way too much security<\/a> to prevent something like that from happening. (of course i&#8217;d rather take the security and surly soldiers ruining my Olympics high.) realistically, though, i&#8217;m only in Sochi for less than 14 hours, so statistically speaking, chances of anything happening while i&#8217;m there are pretty low, though i hope the entire event is uneventful in this respect. at least now it&#8217;s clear what the spectator passes are for &#8212; when i applied for it i thought it was just more bureaucracy but now i know they have a specific security purpose.<\/li>\n<li><strong>a snafu in getting to Sochi<\/strong>\u00a0my time in Russia this go-around is limited, so i don&#8217;t have a lot of leeway. my flight lands less than three and a half hours before my event (<a title=\"Throwing Stones in Hot Pants (aka, Learning to Curl from a Pro!)\" href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2012\/05\/04\/throwing-stones-in-hot-pants-aka-learning-to-curl-from-a-pro\/\">curling, of course<\/a>) starts. if the flight is delayed&#8230;yikes. trip in vain!<\/li>\n<li><strong>problems with transportation between the airport and Olympic Park<\/strong>\u00a0the spectator transportation system does not have a good link between these two locations. rail stops running at 2 AM and buses stop at 1 AM and as far as i can tell, there&#8217;s just one bus line that makes a direct connection. i&#8217;d rather not have to pay for a cab if i stay to explore the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sochi2014.com\/en\/spectators-places\">Coastal Cluster<\/a> after the event.
