The gold-topped Dome of the Rock sits on the Temple Mount where the Jewish Holy Temple once stood and is one of the oldest Islamic buildings in existence, dating from the year 691.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"upload by jon|k, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/11945018153\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"upload\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3808\/11945018153_aa5a24d338_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Dome of the Chain, next to the Dome of the Rock<\/p><\/div>\n<p>i had no idea that the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Temple_Mount\">Temple Mount<\/a> was so highly venerated in Islam and that in terms of external appearances it&#8217;s pretty much an Islamic site (stronghold?) in the heart of what in my head was a biblical city. after learning more about the history of the place (i cannot recommend the <a href=\"http:\/\/english.thekotel.org\/VisitorInfo.asp?id=1\">tour of the Western Wall tunnels<\/a> enough) i have a deeper understanding (and as such, only barely scratching the surface) of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and have a much better appreciation of the enormous significance of this city that is at the crossroads of civilizations and reasons why it&#8217;s been, and continues to be, so contested.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"Panorama of the Dome of the Rock by jon|k, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/11944832525\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Panorama of the Dome of the Rock\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3674\/11944832525_8bbee5504b_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"235\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Dome of the Rock and Dome of the Chain. I was fiddling with HDR via Snapseed on my phone.
