{"id":4827,"date":"2014-02-15T11:00:45","date_gmt":"2014-02-15T19:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/?p=4827"},"modified":"2014-02-15T11:00:45","modified_gmt":"2014-02-15T19:00:45","slug":"instawalk-day-moscow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2014\/02\/instawalk-day-moscow\/","title":{"rendered":"Instawalk: My Day in Moscow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>i had a day in Moscow (which i&#8217;m glad <a title=\"Lessons Learned From My First In-Flight Mechanical &amp; Return to Gate\" href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2014\/02\/13\/lessons-learned-first-flight-mechanical-return-gate\/\">i didn&#8217;t miss<\/a>) so i combined two one-day itineraries (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.frommers.com\/destinations\/moscow\/268052\">Frommer&#8217;s Moscow In One Day<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lonelyplanet.com\/russia\/travel-tips-and-articles\/70001\">Lonely Planet&#8217;s A Perfect Day in Moscow<\/a> &#8212; which had lots of overlap, a good sign i suppose) to make sure i saw the biggies. i started out pretty early, way before the sun rose (sunrise today was nearly 9 AM &#8212; and it seemed like the city really doesn&#8217;t wake up until then), and finished by late evening (including shopping time at the end).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>sidebar: getting around<\/strong> i used a combination of walking and subway. while Moscow does indeed have an extensive subway system, there were times when it was easier to just walk for 20 minutes. the Moscow subway is very similar to the St. Petersburg one (and, i&#8217;d assume by extension, most Russian\/Soviet systems) in that transfer stations may have completely different names, and names in general are very hard to see from inside the train. if you can, use Google Maps&#8217; transit function to tell you which lines to take, which direction to take them in, and how many stops until you need to get out. it&#8217;s especially handy since signs in the stations are all in Cyrillic.<\/p>\n<p>in terms of buying tickets, there are two different types of machines that are hard to tell apart at a quick glance &#8212; ones that sell multiple ride tickets (1, 2, 5, and more) and ones that sell only one- or two-ride tickets or allow you to top up a prepaid card. of course, you can always see a human; just pick the one with the shortest line that meets your needs. the machines have a button to switch to English. buying 5 or more rides gives you a discount. tap the card you get on the turnstile to go through.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>red square<\/h3>\n<p>while it&#8217;s more of a rectangle and it looked bigger on TV (though yes, it&#8217;s large! &#8212; maybe it just looked small because there was a skating rink in the middle of it), there&#8217;s no denying what an important place this is, especially if you seem to only recall it as being the backdrop to oh-so-many news broadcasts in the &#8217;80s.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"upload by jon|k, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/12535343133\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"upload\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7311\/12535343133_2f33fd2f83_o.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Entrance to the Red Square<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"upload by jon|k, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/12532980853\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"upload\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2865\/12532980853_eb8e89f11e_o.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kazan Cathedral. It&#8217;s pretty amazing to see this walking into the square, like a multifaceted jewel off in the distance.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"Have I mentioned how much I love Orthodox Church iconography? #t by jon|k, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/12535240085\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Have I mentioned how much I love Orthodox Church iconography? #t\" src=\"https:\/\/ycpi-farm4.staticflickr.com\/3752\/12535240085_53ffb9ebe1_o.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Inside St. Basil&#8217;s<\/p><\/div>\n<p>a bonus panorama. you can see the ice skating rink complex on the right (it&#8217;s all that stuff that doesn&#8217;t look like it belongs) and one wall of the Kremlin in the middle. note that the big <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Main_Universal_Store\">GUM (\u0413\u0423\u041c) department store<\/a> (=mall) on one side is worth going into, if only for the bathrooms. most of the stores are very high-end, but there&#8217;s a Megafon (\u041c\u0435\u0433\u0430\u0424\u043e\u043d) store in there if you want to pick up a SIM card. (i got one with 3 GB of data for about $11).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a title=\"Panorama of the Red Square before sunrise by jon|k, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/12544523673\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"Panorama of the Red Square before sunrise\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3794\/12544523673_4e402942d9_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"138\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>also, Lenin&#8217;s mausoleum is worth a view, especially if there isn&#8217;t a long line (there was no line today). it&#8217;s free but you have to drop off bags (and anything electronic that can take a picture, including ipads) at a paid cloakroom before you enter. it&#8217;s a bit creepy, but you shouldn&#8217;t miss it (i&#8217;m convinced of that after being <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tmwrnj\/status\/434605643165868033\">convinced by a twitter friend<\/a>). note that the guards are quite intimidating, but i suppose they just want you to be respectful. I think it&#8217;s the Church of the Deposition of the Robe but don&#8217;t quote me on that.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"upload by jon|k, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/12535279325\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"upload\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3772\/12535279325_f00b4fdd3a_o.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">A doorway of the Archangel Cathedral<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>gorky park<\/h3>\n<p>made famous (at least for me) by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=n4RjJKxsamQ&amp;feature=kp\">&#8220;Wind of Change&#8221; by the Scorpions<\/a>, it used to be more of a carnival\/funland but now is a free green space in the heart of the city.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"upload by jon|k, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/12537290755\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"upload\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7455\/12537290755_6a8c66837e_o.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Abutting the northeast end of Gorky Park is Fallen Monument Park (aka the Muzeon), a sculpture park that showcases communist-era statues as well as other works of art. Not as impressive as say, <a title=\"Instawalk \u2014 Memento Park (aka Hello Lenin, Budapest Edition)\" href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2013\/08\/16\/instawalk-memento-park\/\">Memento Park<\/a> in Budapest, but heck, it&#8217;s free and good for a stroll.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"For a country that doesn't like the gays there sure are a lot of rainbows around.
