{"id":4888,"date":"2014-02-22T04:14:03","date_gmt":"2014-02-22T12:14:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/?p=4888"},"modified":"2014-02-22T04:14:03","modified_gmt":"2014-02-22T12:14:03","slug":"instawalk-romes-eur-district-an-architectural-remnant-of-the-fascist-era","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2014\/02\/instawalk-romes-eur-district-an-architectural-remnant-of-the-fascist-era\/","title":{"rendered":"Instawalk: Rome&#8217;s EUR District, An Architectural Remnant of the Fascist Era"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>it was the 1930s: Mussolini was in power, Fascism was here, and Italy was chosen as the site of the 1942 World&#8217;s Fair. of course, <em>Il Duce<\/em>&nbsp;wanted to showcase the resurgence of the country as the heirs to the glories of Ancient Rome, empowered by the Fascist ideals of nationalism. to do this, he started building a modern complex of buildings to the south of the city for&nbsp;the <em>Esposizione Universale Roma:<\/em>&nbsp;EUR. due to World War II, the World&#8217;s Fair never happened, but the buildings remained and EUR is now a business district full of a slightly out-of-place geometric modernity. the buildings are largely in Italian Rationalist style: linear and bereft of decoration, but with echoes of Ancient Rome in its columns and arches.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"EUR Panorama by jon|k, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/12693189353\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"EUR Panorama\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7289\/12693189353_300e251943_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"173\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">So close, yet so far: This doesn&#8217;t look like the Rome we&#8217;re used to! The wide boulevards (watch out for speeding cars), the open spaces, &#8220;modern&#8221; architecture &#8212; it&#8217;s a world away. To the left is the Palazzo dei Congressi, ahead is the Obelisco di Marconi, and to the right is the Palazzo della Civilt\u00e0 Italiana.<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong>sidebar: practical matters<\/strong> in Italian, EUR is pronounced as a complete word, sort of like English &#8220;air&#8221;, not as individual letters. getting there is easy &#8212; just take Metro Line B south towards Laurentina; all EUR stops are labeled as such. in fact, this subway line (Rome&#8217;s first, predating Line A) was conceived of to bring people from the city center to EUR. i spent about three hours exploring and wandering this morning, although you could easily spend more if you go into the museums. if you&#8217;re hungry, the Palombini cafe near the Square Colosseum is a good place to stop for a caff\u00e8 and a bite to eat (and it has free wifi).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_4889\" style=\"width: 545px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/N8gCa\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4889\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4889 \" alt=\"From\" src=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/files\/2014\/02\/Untitled.jpg\" width=\"535\" height=\"548\" srcset=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/02\/Untitled.jpg 535w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/02\/Untitled-292x300.jpg 292w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/02\/Untitled-400x409.jpg 400w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/02\/Untitled-200x204.jpg 200w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/02\/Untitled-150x153.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 535px) 100vw, 535px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4889\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From the EUR Magliana subway stop in the upper left, this is the approximate path I took, ending at the EUR Palasport stop. Pietro e Paolo. There&#8217;s an unfinished mural and what looks to be a pretty grand open inner courtyard. How I wished I could have gotten access!<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"Building behind the vines by jon|k, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/12692424874\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Building behind the vines\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3730\/12692424874_937a4c54df_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Continue south to the Parco Centrale del Lago which surrounds the manmade Laghetto dell&#8217;EUR to find a park with fountains and waterfalls &#8212; and this small building hidden behind some vines.
