{"id":5174,"date":"2014-04-19T20:53:03","date_gmt":"2014-04-20T03:53:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/?p=5174"},"modified":"2014-04-19T20:53:03","modified_gmt":"2014-04-20T03:53:03","slug":"first-exposure-live-avant-garde-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2014\/04\/first-exposure-live-avant-garde-music\/","title":{"rendered":"My First Exposure to Live Avant Garde Music"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>i believe that the purpose of life, or at least the purpose of my life, is to experience as much of this world as i possibly can. as such, every now and then i try to test my comfort zone with something completely new and unknown to me. about two years ago, i came up to Manhattan to <a href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2012\/12\/01\/chinese-opera-peony-pavilion-at-the-met\/\" title=\"Chinese Opera: Peony Pavilion at The Met\">watch a Chinese opera<\/a>. that was&#8230;an interesting aural experience. <\/p>\n<p>a quick reminder:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XiO-NGzAEBM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>i was looking for something to experience on this trip to Manhattan and found out that there is a <a href=\"http:\/\/matafestival.org\/\">Festival of New Music put on by MATA<\/a>, a group founded by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philip_Glass\">Philip Glass<\/a>, among others, that supports the efforts of young composers. <\/p>\n<p>the concert i attended was the American premiere of <em>Matra<\/em> by Italian\/Swiss composer <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oscar_Bianchi\">Oscar Bianchi<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/files\/2014\/04\/IMG_6508-e1397963704574.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/files\/2014\/04\/IMG_6508-e1397963704574-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6508\" width=\"752\" height=\"1002\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5175\" srcset=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/04\/IMG_6508-e1397963704574-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/04\/IMG_6508-e1397963704574-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/04\/IMG_6508-e1397963704574-400x533.jpg 400w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/04\/IMG_6508-e1397963704574-200x266.jpg 200w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/04\/IMG_6508-e1397963704574-150x200.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 752px) 100vw, 752px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>before the performance started i struck up a conversation with the lady to my right, and expressed my apprehension about modern music. she said that what we&#8217;d be hearing tonight are &#8220;sounds of today&#8221; and that, for instance, when <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Twelve-tone_technique\">twelve-tone technique<\/a> first came out it was cacophonous but our ears are used to it by now.
