{"id":5438,"date":"2014-05-23T05:04:49","date_gmt":"2014-05-23T12:04:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/?p=5438"},"modified":"2014-05-23T05:04:49","modified_gmt":"2014-05-23T12:04:49","slug":"exploring-uzupis-boho-indie-neighborhood-breakaway-republic-vilnius","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2014\/05\/exploring-uzupis-boho-indie-neighborhood-breakaway-republic-vilnius\/","title":{"rendered":"Exploring U\u017eupis, the Boho-Indie Neighborhood (and Breakaway Republic) of Vilnius"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>little did i know when i booked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airbnb.com\/rooms\/1222993\">my Airbnb<\/a> that the neighborhood it was in,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/U%C5%BEupis\">U\u017eupis<\/a>, was so&#8230;vibrant! it&#8217;s just\u00a0east of Old Town, surrounded on three sides by the Vilnia River, and has a completely different vibe than the rest of the city, more akin to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Freetown_Christiania\">Christiania<\/a> of Copenhagen but less hippie and more law-abiding (as far as i can tell). despite that, in 1997, the residents of this neighborhood declared themselves an independent republic with a constitution, army, flag, and so on. their independence day is April 1, so take it how you will. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"Entrance to U\u017eupio by Jonathan Khoo, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/14064005710\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5320\/14064005710_2939dd60f5_c.jpg\" alt=\"Entrance to U\u017eupis\" width=\"800\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The main bridge crossing into the &#8220;Republic&#8221; of U\u017eupis<\/p><\/div>\n<p>in the 1990s, U\u017eupis started gentrifying. what was as a long-neglected, abandoned neighborhood has seen its population go from\u00a0prostitutes and homeless squatters to bohemians and artist squatters to hipsters and coffee shops and even the current mayor of Vilnius. despite these changes (and the influx of tourists taking a peek), i hope the residents can continue its indie spirit.<\/p>\n<p>the art scene (besides lots of street art, to my pleasant surprise) is getting legitimized with the opening of some galleries near the river. most works on public display &#8212; my favorite articles are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>4. Everyone has the right to make mistakes.<\/li>\n<li>5. Everyone has the right to individuality.<\/li>\n<li>6. Everyone has the right to love.<\/li>\n<li>33. Everyone has the right to cry.<\/li>\n<li>35. No-one has the right to make another person guilty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>before the rest of the pictures, a word about food: there&#8217;s a small Iki grocery store (it takes mag stripe credit cards, like most places here, btw) at the square, along with several restaurants. i was unimpressed with the pizzeria on Paupio (despite high ratings on Foursquare, though i only tried it once, to be fair) and the cafe that&#8217;s at the river, but up the hill on the main street (U\u017eupio g.) on the right is a French cafe and bakery, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thierrykepykla.lt\/lt\/\">Thierry Kepykla<\/a>. right across the street from my Airbnb, it ended up being my neighborhood haunt. the lattes are pretty good but go for the almond croissants. they came highly recommended <a href=\"https:\/\/foursquare.com\/v\/thierry-kepykla\/4d43cfca7e2e54816deb598f\">on Foursquare<\/a>, and for good reason. i could eat the filling by the spoonful!<\/p>\n<p>and now, the Instawalk:<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"Walkway by Jonathan Khoo, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/14062888548\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2901\/14062888548_efa08f92e1_o.jpg\" alt=\"Walkway\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The walkway that leads north to the river and out of U\u017eupis<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"Renoporn?
