{"id":5522,"date":"2014-06-01T05:29:03","date_gmt":"2014-06-01T12:29:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/?p=5522"},"modified":"2014-06-01T05:29:03","modified_gmt":"2014-06-01T12:29:03","slug":"exploring-abandoned-carrie-furnace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2014\/06\/exploring-abandoned-carrie-furnace\/","title":{"rendered":"Exploring the Abandoned Carrie Furnace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>no, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carrie_Furnace\">Carrie Furnace<\/a> isn&#8217;t the prom that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esquire.com\/blogs\/culture\/carrie-climax-scene\">Carrie set ablaze<\/a> in Stephen King&#8217;s story (*shudder* i can only imagine how many blog entries begin with this, but i couldn&#8217;t help it), but rather an old <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blast_furnace\">blast furnace<\/a> near Pittsburgh where they made <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pig_iron\">pig iron<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>by the way, before i continue, i urge you to put on my theme song for this weekend:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ILWSp0m9G2U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" gesture=\"media\" allow=\"encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>back to the story at hand: i went on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.riversofsteel.com\/things-to-do\/event\/carrie-furnaces-photo-safari\/\">photo safari tour<\/a> yesterday, dual-led by a local photography professor and a site expert. i don&#8217;t remember exactly how i discovered the photo safari tour series, but i knew i had to do it and booked my ticket (and decided on this trip to Pittsburgh from Philly) late the night before. i did the sunset photo safari, which i don&#8217;t think was ideal since i&#8217;d have preferred more light, but it was the only one that worked with my schedule, and (all together now) beggars can&#8217;t be choosers!<\/p>\n<p>IT WAS SO WORTH IT. the amount of ruinporn (the photography guide called me out on my addiction) was staggering, even though some areas were off-limits (for safety reasons). much of the site has been left to decay but there are development efforts underway. in the meantime, the site hosts some public guerilla art &#8212; and very well, might i add. i ambushed the historian for a little lesson in what exactly a blast furnace does; now that i know i can only imagine what the working conditions must have been like! that was also a nice departure from my typical modus operandi &#8212; having someone explain the history behind an abandoned place puts it in an entirely new light.<\/p>\n<p>as always, all my pictures are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/sets\/72157644538467247\">up on Flickr<\/a>\u00a0(tons more where these came from).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"DSC01630 by Jonathan Khoo, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/14130439767\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2916\/14130439767_10112d3fcf_z.jpg\" alt=\"DSC01630\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The central hall (well, now-central) is flooded with beams of light. These tall chimney-like things were fed raw materials from the top and super hot air from the bottom.
