(long story short, i wanted to live in Europe and getting an education there was the easiest way. free tuition and classes in English? i couldn&#8217;t say no.)<\/p>\n<p>despite being one of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_T%C3%BCbingen\">oldest and more famous universities<\/a> in Germany, it&#8217;s now known around the world for being well, the location of a giant&#8230;yeah. let&#8217;s not discuss that further. let&#8217;s focus on some other things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the university has been around since the 15th century &#8212; that&#8217;s full on Game of Thrones era, y&#8217;all.<\/li>\n<li>at least 10 Nobel Prize winners have been on its staff.<\/li>\n<li>you may have heard of some of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Category:University_of_T%C3%BCbingen_alumni\">its student and faculty alumni<\/a>\u00a0(besides moi, of course): <em>Johannes Kepler<\/em> (laws of planetary motion), anyone? <em>Hans Geiger<\/em> of Geiger counter fame? <em>Georg Hegel<\/em>, famous philosopher? <em>Leonhart Fuchs<\/em>, after which fuchsia (the plant, and hence the color) is named? <em>Joseph Ratzinger<\/em>, who you may know better as Pope Benedict? <em>Friedrich Miescher<\/em>, whose discovery of nucleic acids led the way to the discovery of DNA? <em>Alois Alzheimer<\/em> (let you forget)?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>above all, though, since this is a travel blog, let&#8217;s just focus on how quaint the whole place is! T\u00fcbingen is most definitely a college town &#8212; it&#8217;s located in the southwest of Germany (in the state of Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg) about 45 minutes south of Stuttgart by express train. the Neckar River flows through it, blocks from an old town with cobblestone streets and half-timbered houses. i was actually surprised at how many tourists the town gets (i expected 0, there were more than 0, most from Germany and France!).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"Neckar-West by Jonathan Khoo, on Flickr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jonk\/50482702\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/30\/50482702_ac8d52361a_z.jpg\" alt=\"Neckar-West\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hanging out on the banks of the Neckar. I still distinctly remember the first time I set foot in the <em>Altstadt<\/em> &#8212; I was overcome by the feeling of history and academia. Friends, let me tell you in a country where air conditioning is scarce, you want to be on the ground floor when it&#8217;s hot out.
