YMMV based on your medical provider and insurance.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>UPDATE:\u00a0<\/strong>i found these pages on my medical group&#8217;s website about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pamf.org\/travel\/services\/services.html\">what travel medicine is<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pamf.org\/travel\/services\/why.html\">why you should consider it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>almost 13 years ago, i <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/892172\">went to India for the first time<\/a> (and well, up until the end of this month, my only time) for a friend&#8217;s wedding in Coimbatore. it was also my first time getting shots in preparation for a trip, which i&#8217;ve only ever done once after, for my <a title=\"Cambodia: The Bestest For Indie-ing\" href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2012\/03\/the-bestest-for-indie-ing\/\">2011 trip to Cambodia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>what you need<\/h3>\n<p>i&#8217;m usually pretty good about following <a href=\"http:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/travel\/destinations\/list\">CDC instructions for immunizations<\/a>\u00a0(though not always, i didn&#8217;t get any for my <a title=\"First Timer: Myanmar\" href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2013\/11\/first-timer-myanmar\/\">trip to Myanmar<\/a>), and <a href=\"http:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/travel\/destinations\/traveler\/none\/india\">for India<\/a> they recommend being up-to-date on the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Measles-mumps-rubella (MMR)<\/li>\n<li>Diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis<\/li>\n<li>Chickenpox<\/li>\n<li>Polio<\/li>\n<li>Flu (which i would have gotten anyways)<\/li>\n<li>Hepatitis A<\/li>\n<li>Typhoid<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>with optional hepatitis B, malaria, Japanese encephalitis, and rabies depending on your activities.<\/p>\n<p>because i already had many of these shots before, a lot of them ended up being boosters just to make sure i was covered.<\/p>\n<h3>what it cost<\/h3>\n<p>my medical insurance covered most of the shots i needed, as well as\u00a0the visit to the travel medicine clinic itself (i think &#8212; i may owe a $16[?! random] copay, but it wasn&#8217;t billed and i didn&#8217;t pay it onsite):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/files\/2014\/11\/Untitled.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6465\" src=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/files\/2014\/11\/Untitled.png\" alt=\"Untitled\" width=\"735\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/11\/Untitled.png 735w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/11\/Untitled-300x152.png 300w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/11\/Untitled-400x202.png 400w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/11\/Untitled-200x101.png 200w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/11\/Untitled-150x76.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 735px) 100vw, 735px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>unfortunately, they didn&#8217;t cover the typhoid vaccine (and the $31 it cost the nurse to spend 5 seconds injecting it in me &#8212; which conveniently was the first item billed; i wonder if it would have been $14 if they switched the order of the polio and typhoid&#8230;).<\/p>\n<p>i was prescribed <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atovaquone\/proguanil\">Malarone<\/a> as my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/malaria\/travelers\/drugs.html\">malaria prophylaxis<\/a>. for my first trip to India i remember being put on <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mefloquine\">Lariam<\/a>. luckily i didn&#8217;t have any side effects but there&#8217;s now an FDA <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boxed_warning\">black box warning<\/a>\u00a0 about potential long-term neurological and psychiatric\u00a0problems associated with it &#8212; so this was easily not an option. that left doxycycline and Malarone as the two top contenders. i did doxy before my Cambodia trip. it was cheap, but you have to take it FOR. EV. ER. (like for a month after travel finishes). the nurse was pretty set on Malarone and i wasn&#8217;t in the mood to argue since i&#8217;d rather spend a bit more and not have to deal with a daily pill for over a month.<\/p>\n<p>i also got an antibiotic (only for when diarrhea\u00a0is\u00a0<em>really bad<\/em>, apparently &#8212; otherwise loose stools you use an over-the-counter anti-diarrheal), and both medications together cost me $40.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/files\/2014\/11\/cost2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6466\" src=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/files\/2014\/11\/cost2.png\" alt=\"cost2\" width=\"686\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/11\/cost2.png 686w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/11\/cost2-300x79.png 300w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/11\/cost2-400x105.png 400w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/11\/cost2-200x52.png 200w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/11\/cost2-150x39.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 686px) 100vw, 686px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>why (aka, benefits)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>i&#8217;ve seen what skipping it can do<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>way back on my first trip to India, a friend (the bride&#8217;s brother, as a matter of fact) didn&#8217;t get immunizations and came back with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Typhoid_fever\">typhoid<\/a>. we pretty much ate the same things, and we think we narrowed it down to a meal (very delicious, actually &#8212; some of the tastiest chicken i&#8217;ve ever had) we had\u00a0during\u00a0the (slow and goregous) two-day train ride up the western coast.<\/p>\n<p>yeah, it sucks that the disease i&#8217;m the most paranoid about now is the one that insurance didn&#8217;t cover the shot for, but oh well. i&#8217;d rather be safe and out some money than sorry later &#8212; from what i remember, he was down and out for quite a while!<\/p>\n<p><strong>you get much more than shots<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/files\/2014\/11\/DSC03265.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6467\" src=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/files\/2014\/11\/DSC03265.jpg\" alt=\"DSC03265\" width=\"1000\" height=\"666\" srcset=\"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/11\/DSC03265.jpg 1000w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/11\/DSC03265-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/11\/DSC03265-400x266.jpg 400w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/11\/DSC03265-200x133.jpg 200w, http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/\/sites\/48\/2014\/11\/DSC03265-150x99.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>my travel clinic gives out these very detailed folders full of information &#8212; about protecting yourself from the sun, nasties that can be hiding in food and water, treating common ailments, and avoiding mosquitoes. you could probably find a lot of this stuff online, but it&#8217;s good to have someone go over everything and be able to deal with\u00a0your concerns.<\/p>\n<h3>is it worth it?<\/h3>\n<p>this is one of those things that is hard to answer since if you don&#8217;t get sick, you may never know if it was due to immunizations and\u00a0things you learned from the travel clinic visit. and alas, even with insurance, my\u00a0$194\u00a0out of pocket (not including things like mosquito repellent or Imodium) is <em>definitely not cheap<\/em>, at least not to me. i&#8217;m pretty bad about taking out extended travel insurance (beyond what i get from my credit card), so i think of myself as someone who lives slightly dangerously, but in cases like this, when it comes to easily preventable health issues, i&#8217;m a little more discerning.<\/p>\n<p><em>$194, though.<\/em> i&#8217;m trying to convince myself it is, and i&#8217;m pretty sure i&#8217;m succeeding. the typhoid &#8212; the big ticket item &#8212; is good for two years, so i&#8217;ve gotta take advantage of that. i already have trips to Nepal, Tunisia, and rural Philippines booked, and it&#8217;s CDC-recommended for those countries (especially if you&#8217;re a bit adventurous), so it&#8217;ll come in handy again several times over. i have to say, though, i think if i were not presented with this India trip first, given my previous experience with the country, i&#8217;d be less likely to have gotten all this done &#8212; i didn&#8217;t even think about shots for Mongolia last year, for instance (which falls into the same categories as the previous three countries).<\/p>\n<p>oh, and that $21 for the visit (paid by insurance or not) &#8212;
