{"id":6534,"date":"2014-11-13T07:13:16","date_gmt":"2014-11-13T15:13:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/?p=6534"},"modified":"2014-11-13T07:13:16","modified_gmt":"2014-11-13T15:13:16","slug":"visit-langa-gugulethu-townships-lunch-mzolis-meat-place","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/first2board.com\/wanderlusty\/2014\/11\/visit-langa-gugulethu-townships-lunch-mzolis-meat-place\/","title":{"rendered":"A Visit to Langa and Gugulethu Townships, and Lunch at Mzoli&#8217;s Meat Place"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>a plan B that should have been plan A<\/h3>\n<p>no, i wasn&#8217;t originally going to do a township tour. as interested as i am about other cultures and ways of life, i was never comfortable with what i perceived to be the zoo-like ways of these excursions, and i&#8217;ve always been a bit hesitant\/scared\/chickenshit about being &#8220;forced&#8221; to interact with locals (township or ritzy resort, all the same). i made a reservation to do a Cape Point tour and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capetown.travel\/attractions\/entry\/Boulders_penguin_colony\">see the cute penguins<\/a> instead. unfortunately, after waiting 40 minutes for my tour pickup at a local hotel, i discovered the agency i booked it through didn&#8217;t actually confirm the booking with the tour provider. it was an honest mistake (she sent their email to me instead), so i don&#8217;t hold any grudges.<\/p>\n<p>i quickly tried to think of what to do and remembered that a new tour started up last month in association with the red double-decker CitySightseeing company, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.citysightseeing.co.za\/Cape-township-tour\">LaGuGu Township Tour<\/a>. i took the bus downtown to the pickup point, bought a ticket, and off i went.<\/p>\n<p>best decision of the week.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">So no Cape Point and penguins for me. Going to do a township tour; forcing myself to step out of comfort zone. <a href=\"http:\/\/t.co\/vMEPrBfBY3\">pic.twitter.com\/vMEPrBfBY3<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Jonathan Khoo (@jonk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jonk\/status\/532791417840893955?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 13, 2014<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h3>the tour<\/h3>\n<p>it&#8217;s advertised as a tour of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Langa,_Cape_Town\">Langa<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gugulethu\">Gugulethu<\/a> townships, but it&#8217;s more like a tour of Langa and a short visit to Gugulethu, mostly for a meal at local institution Mzoli&#8217;s (more on that later). while it says &#8220;hop on hop off&#8221; &#8212; and i suppose you could do it like that &#8212; it really ended up being a three hour guided tour, which was great. we had knowledgeable guides who grew up in the townships and the group was small (four of us) and i never felt in danger.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>note<\/strong> i heard the tour name pronounced as &#8220;la-zhu-zhu&#8221;, not &#8220;la-goo-goo&#8221;, despite the fact that the first two syllables of Gugulethu are pronounced &#8220;goo-goo&#8221;.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>the guide explained as we were driving to Langa (in new vans, very nice, btw) that it&#8217;s not like a zoo, but rather the tours are meant to bring awareness and understanding (which the locals are all for), as well as increase publicity and commercialism to help drive the local economy (which they are even more for). the local residents that we met were really friendly and i think didn&#8217;t mind the interaction with us outsiders &#8212; at least if they did, they didn&#8217;t show it. PHEW. i never felt uncomfortable at all, nor was there any reason to. now i feel kind of ridiculous about being so apprehensive.<\/p>\n<p>i really appreciated the fact that the guides are from the townships themselves so know residents and can speak to life as it is (and was for them growing up).<\/p>\n<h3>photos<\/h3>\n<p>there is the option of biking or walking;
