so the era of Soviet airplanes is, for better or worse, pretty much gone, at least for me (since i don’t have any plans to go anywhere where those are flown), but a Russian company has started making a regional jet that is seeing service primarily in Russia (Aeroflot) and Mexico (Interjet).<\/p>\n

far from being rickety objects of curiosity, the Sukhoi Superjet 100<\/a> seemed like a pretty normal plane for the roundtrip i took from Moscow to Bucharest. it wasn’t really a deciding factor in my choice (it worked well price- and schedule-wise); being able to try a Superjet out was just a bonus. i’m not too well-versed in regional jets, thank goodness, but indeed i couldn’t really complain about the plane or the service (those bright red-orange uniforms they wear, tho!). the seat pitch seemed a bit cramped but i have a feeling it’s pretty normal. what i loved was that the overhead bin on the 3-seat side could fit my large ‘Murican-sized rollaboard with room to spare! whether you get it through check-in is another story — online check-in is your friend.<\/p>\n

i could have sworn the plane was quieter on the flight down from Moscow, but this time it seemed a bit louder than i remembered it. but otherwise, really, nothing remarkable, but i’m glad i can at least say i’ve flown on a Russian plane.<\/p>\n

there are two lavatories in coach; this is the smaller one.<\/p>\n

and some selfies (with a laviator, natch). man i look (and feel) tired. had to take a 6:25 train this morning from Sibiu to Bucharest…<\/p>\n

i’ve learned that Victory Day (which happens to be today) is a very important day on the Russian calendar. the flight attendant made an announcement (which i later learned was basically “Happy Victory Day from the Great Patriotic War”) and everyone cheered except for me (i was the one looking around bewildered). the “70 Years” logo is all over the airport and town, and even the plane (as you can see on the exterior shots above). right now i’m watching a military parade on TV…<\/p>\n
