Stylized, but it says \u041c\u041e\u041d\u0413\u041e\u041b \u041d\u0410\u0410\u0414\u0410\u041c, or MONGOL NAADAM; Naadam is an annual athletic competition.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>here&#8217;s how i mentally group (and thus, helped myself learn) the core Cyrillic letters. some languages use additional letters and <strong>may have different sounds\u00a0for these<\/strong>, but this list\u00a0should definitely get you on your way. note that if you see what looks to be cursive or italics, good luck, as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cyrillic_alphabets#Common_letters\">many letters\u00a0completely change their shape<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>of course i&#8217;m a native (American) English speaker, so if you&#8217;re a native speaker of a Cyrillic language and have any additions or corrections, let me know!<\/p>\n<h3>the ones that look\u00a0similar<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u0410 \u0430<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>sounds like the &#8220;a&#8221; in\u00a0<em>father<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u0411 \u0431<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>sounds like the &#8220;b&#8221; in\u00a0<em>bus<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u0415 \u0435<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>sounds like the &#8220;e&#8221; in\u00a0<em>t<\/em><em>en<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u041a \u043a<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>sounds like the &#8220;k&#8221; in\u00a0<em>keg<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u041c \u043c<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>sounds like the &#8220;m&#8221; in\u00a0<em>mom<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u041e \u043e<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>sounds like the &#8220;o&#8221; in\u00a0<em>go<\/em> if you stop it short and don&#8217;t end it with the &#8220;uuu&#8221; sound (say &#8220;go&#8221; and draw out the vowel and you&#8217;ll see what i mean &#8212; cut the sound off before you start to round your lips)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u0421 \u0441<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>sounds like the &#8220;c&#8221; in\u00a0<em>cent<\/em> (so really, an &#8220;s&#8221; sound)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u0422 \u0442<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>sounds like the &#8220;t&#8221; in\u00a0<em>toy<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>false friends<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u0412 \u0432<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>not a &#8220;B&#8221;\u00a0&#8212;\u00a0sounds like the &#8220;v&#8221; in\u00a0<em>video<\/em> (i remember it by thinking of the way someone with a Spanish accent might say &#8220;video&#8221; &#8212; it&#8217;s a bit convoluted, but it works for me)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u0418 \u0438<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>not an &#8220;n&#8221; &#8212; sounds like the &#8220;i&#8221; in\u00a0<em>hit<\/em> or\u00a0<em>machine<\/em> (depending on the language)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u0419 \u0439<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>also not an &#8220;n&#8221; (or &#8220;\u00f1&#8221; heh) &#8212; sounds like the &#8220;y&#8221; in\u00a0<em>boy<\/em>, sort of a &#8220;yuh&#8221; sound<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u0417 \u0437<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>not an &#8220;E&#8221; &#8212; sounds like the &#8220;z&#8221;\u00a0<em>zoo<\/em> (it sort of looks like a lowercase cursive &#8220;z&#8221; to me?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u041d \u043d<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>not an &#8220;H&#8221; &#8212; sounds like the &#8220;n&#8221; in\u00a0<em>no<\/em> (think of it as an N with the diagonal line flattened out)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u0420 \u0440<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>not a &#8220;P&#8221; &#8212; sounds like the &#8220;r&#8221; in <em>girl<\/em>\u00a0if you flap or trill your &#8220;r&#8221; like someone with a Scottish accent might. this could also go in the next section, since it resembles the Greek letter\u00a0\u03c1, or rho, which makes a similar sound.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u0423 \u0443<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>not a &#8220;y&#8221; &#8212; sounds like the &#8220;oo&#8221; in <em>toot<\/em>. (some European languages have &#8220;y&#8221;s that sound like &#8220;oo&#8221;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u0425 \u0445<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>not an &#8220;x&#8221; &#8212; sounds like the &#8220;h&#8221; in\u00a0<em>have<\/em>. (a really breathy h)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u042f \u044f<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>not an &#8220;R&#8221; &#8212; sounds like the &#8220;ya&#8221; in\u00a0<em>yard\u00a0<\/em>or the &#8220;ia&#8221; in <em>Julia<\/em> if you say it fast as one sound (jool-ya).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u042c \u044c<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>not a &#8220;b&#8221; &#8212; either has no sound, changes the sound of the letter before it, or sort of sounds like the &#8220;y&#8221; in\u00a0<em>yes<\/em>, especially before a vowel (honestly, i tend to just ignore this little bugger)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u0428 \u0448<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>not an &#8220;M&#8221; &#8212; sounds like the &#8220;sh&#8221; in\u00a0<em>should<\/em><\/li>\n<li>\u0429 \u0449 &#8212; either sounds like a really long &#8220;sssshhhh&#8221; (in Russian) or, in some languages, &#8220;sht&#8221; or &#8220;sh-cha&#8221; (and other sounds in others).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>the ones that you may remember from math or physics class<\/h3>\n<p>these letters look like their Greek counterparts; you may remember using them in equations. (or if you were into the Greek scene in college, you may recognize them from fraternity or sorority names.)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u0413 \u0433<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>like the Greek letter gamma &#8212; sounds like the &#8220;g&#8221; in\u00a0<em>go<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u0414 \u0434<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>like the Greek letter delta &#8212; sounds like the &#8220;d&#8221; in\u00a0<em>do<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u041b \u043b<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>like the Greek letter lambda &#8212; sounds like the &#8220;l&#8221; in <em>low<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>smell<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u041f \u043f<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>like the Greek letter pi &#8212; sounds like the &#8220;p&#8221; in\u00a0<em>pie<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u0424 \u0444<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>like the Greek letter phi &#8212; sounds like the &#8220;f&#8221; in\u00a0<em>fun<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>the ones you just need to memorize<\/h3>\n<p>these, along with\u00a0\u0428, are the ones i find the hardest since they don&#8217;t match up with anything i already know.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u0416 \u0436<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>sounds like the &#8220;zh&#8221; sound in\u00a0<em>mea<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">s<\/span>ure<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u0426 \u0446<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>sounds like the &#8220;ts&#8221; sound in <em>pi<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">zz<\/span>a<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u0427 \u0447<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>sounds like the &#8220;ch&#8221; sound in <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ch<\/span>arm<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u042e \u044e<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>sounds like <em>you<\/em>\u00a0at the beginning of words or just the &#8220;oo&#8221;
