Vanilla Reloads at CVS Are Now Displaying “Tender Type is Not Valid”

On Monday, I wrote an article titled, “Is Tomorrow the Death of Vanilla Reloads at CVS?” April 1st was the death of Vanilla Reloads for some stores, but the hard-coded “cash only” POS update has slowly been trickling down to your local CVS register.

The word on the street is that the entire rollout will start on April 4th, so I headed to my “go to” CVS location for one last shot at Vanilla Reloads. I was giddy when I saw 10 Vanilla Reloads on the rack.

I was so excited that I took a picture of the payment display as she was scanning all 10 of them.

When I went to swipe my points rewards earning credit card, the Point of Sale system rejected it. She showed me the screen saying “Tender Type is Not Valid”.

I tried swiping my card again and it displayed the same message. The cashier didn’t know anything about the POS update and was shocked to learn that Vanilla Reloads at CVS are now displaying “Tender Type is Not Valid”.

Sadly, all good things must come to an end until we figure out the next best thing. I will be experimenting with other prepaid cards and give you updates on what’s happening out there in the manufactured spending world.
