Apple 12 Days of Gifts – Kings of Leon – Day 9

Apple Day 9

On the Ninth Day of Christmas Apple gave to me… Kings of Leon

It’s difficult not to put an exclamation mark at the end of that announcement! A nice follow to yesterday’s Wimpy Kid book!

Apple’s Gift of KOL tracks were recorded at Kings of Leon’s iTunes Festival performance and include Black Thumbnai(Because of the Times) and Sex on Fire (Because of the Times) and the videos for Family Tree (iTunes Festival 2013) and Wait for Me (iTunes Festival 2013). The iTunes Festival is held in London and is a monthlong extravaganza of concerts at the Roundhouse. I think these are outstanding gifts… for the King of Leon devotees and for those, like me, who simply enjoy it when they hear it. I typically find myself playing their music when I’m driving or walking….great on the road music either way!

Kings of Leon began their career close to my neck of the woods in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1999. The band is composed of brothers Anthony Caleb Followill (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Ivan Nathan Followill, (drums, percussion, backing vocals) and Michael Jared Followill (bass guitar, backing vocals), with their cousin Cameron Matthew Followill lead guitar, backing vocals). It seems there is a lot of collective family talent to be found in Tennessee, and the Kings of Leon show how extraordinary that talent can be.

Growing up in a home with a father who was a Pentecostal preacher, the boys were not allowed to listen to rock music but could play a little here and there at revivals.  When their parents divorced the brothers moved to Nashville and fell headfirst into the music scene there. Initially a blend of Southern rock and blues, their music has slowly shifted and evolved to a more alternative/country mix….quite suitable for the arena concerts they play.

Their most recent album is Mechanical Bull which was first released in the UK, Germany, Sweden, Ireland and Australia in 2012, with a US release date of September 2013.

Great choice Apple!
