¡Adiós Spanair! :(

i saw on twitter (hat tip @dkmomus) that Spanair (JK) is shutting down! it’s always sad when an airline goes out of business, but even more so when it’s tied to such good memories. both times i’ve been to Spain, it involved Spanair.

the first time was in 2006, since it was the cheapest way to get to Málaga from Stuttgart (STR-BCN-AGP and back) for two weeks at a summer school — as a student, cost trumped alliance allegiance (though in this case, it worked out since i’m a Star Alliance guy). ah that was a most excellent trip.

Me on a seesaw in Málaga, 2006

the second time was for my 2008 family trip to Spain and Portugal. there was some drama with this (involving me launching an Executive Email Carpet Bomb to United/Air Canada/Star Alliance). my brother and i weren’t supposed to be on Spanair but had to be placed on a JK (Spanair) flight because of an AC (Air Canada) schedule change, so i flew them from MAD to FRA. of course the drama made it so that the new itinerary wasn’t ticketed and i had to call United ticketing long-distance on my cell phone from the Madrid airport, but that’s another story for another day.

in any case, even though i’ve only flown three segments on them, Spanair will forever be linked to my Spain trips, and thus to good memories. sure, this isn’t as big as a TWA (my main airline in college, alas no tears lost for them) or PanAm shutdown, but 🙁 nonetheless.
