The Durrty Black Hole That Is The Seat-Back Pocket

i know, i know. it’s one of the dirtiest places on a plane. but it’s so handy to store your shit (no nasty pun intended — though i did hear someone clip their nails on my last flight, come to think of nasty things) when you’re dozing away or eating.

i placed an order today for my third set of noise-cancelling earphones in less than two years (i prefer earphones to headphones because they’re more portable [lose-able?], are easier to wear when sleeping, and they don’t muss up my hair *smug*).

For the price (<$50) these work really well. Definitely recommend if you're looking for something like this. Just remember to really shove them in to make a good seal. Err, yeah.

my usual modus operandi is to put my earphones and my eyemask in a pouch (which a friend gave to me on my first trip to Turkey in 2003) and stick it halfway into the seat-back pocket:

A recent Air Asia flight KUL-PEN

Air Asia flight KUL-PEN

but on a recent flight (not sure which, but i’m thinking either PEN-BKK or BKK-HKG or maybe even a lounge in BKK) the black hole swallowed my pouch. (also, i’ve left a phone on a plane — it may still be sitting in the ATH lost-and-found…)

from what people are saying on twitter, and what i know deep down, i shouldn’t be using the seat-back pocket for sanitary and out-of-sight-out-of-mind reasons. so where does that leave me to put my stuff? on long-haul flights my carry-ons are all overhead and having to get up/open/get/put/close/sit down is a pain in the rump. i’m not sure there’s a better option, though. perhaps i can get a pouch with a string and dangle it on the coat hook? at least that way it’s more visible? or just make sure i’m not wearing my skinny jeans and stuff everything in my pockets?

hints? advice?
