did you know Tel Aviv has the largest number of Bauhaus-style buildings in the world? they comprise the so-called White City (a UNESCO World Heritage site) and i was looking forward to seeing some of them during my short time in town since i’m a crazy Bauhaus fanatic. we took the hour-long self-guided waking tour from the Bauhaus Center (includes introduction video, audioguide, and map). i was dismayed, though, to see that many of the buildings were in a state of disrepair. i guess people don’t care enough to invest money in their maintenance? 🙁 sad panda indeed.
in any case, if you’re an architecture fan (or Bauhaus fan, natch), it’s well worth your time to do either the self-guided or docent-led tour, or at the very minimum drive around town and see some buildings in this style in real life (rumor has it Rothschild Blvd. has a large number). i’ve only ever seen them in museum exhibitions, so actually standing in front of them and admiring the linear and curvilinear forms was pretty awesome.
if you squint your eyes, it’s pretty magical. the cracks and peeling paint fade away into what you could swear is a photo in a Dessau publication. i’m still in awe!
LOVE looking at architecture from around the world. great shots 🙂
Thanks!!
