When a Review Reveals More About the Reviewer Than Anything Else

i was researching hotels around Frankfurt Airport this morning and came across a review on a major review site that said the following:

Untitled

can you just imagine my face when i read that first paragraph?

BUD35_jIUAEz4-Z

she had three major complaints, the first being that there was trouble with her door’s lock and that the people at reception were not available — and when they were, were just being perfunctory. fine, very very valid.

but then i get to the next two (in the screenshot above) and i really started to wonder about her.

it’s one thing if you complain about bad food. in fact, if you just left it at the first sentence, i might have given it a pass. but once you bring in cultural relativism and start comparing things to “back at home”, NO. NO NO NO. also, i found out this person lives in the city i live in, and nope, i would definitely NOT say we’re in a hotbed of culinary excellence. (i appreciate the diversity of food we get in our Bay Area suburb, but to say it’s “delicious fusion food” is a bit of a stretch.)

her third point about the hotel being far away from the city center…well, at first i was irate because i thought that just meant poor planning on her part, because if you didn’t figure out that the airport is not steps away from say, Die Zeil, whose fault is that? certainly not the hotel’s. did it advertise as being close to downtown? i doubt it.

i then gave it a second look as i was pulling up the review to write this post and thought maybe she is just giving advice in case people were thinking of heading into town, but then i saw she gave the hotel two stars for location.

This is why God invented Google Maps.

did you not investigate the location of the hotel before booking? the hotel’s name even has the word “Airport” in it. if you wanted to visit the heart of Frankfurt, you should have booked a hotel in the heart of Frankfurt. (for comparison, the average Location rating for this place is 4.5 stars.)

ok, i’m done with my rant. she ends her review with “Will never stay at this hotel again” — good. because i just booked a night there.

  1. I’m still laughing about the “fusion foods”. I think you can just stop reading the review at this point.
