How to Get to Krakow From Auschwitz By Train

I’ve read a lot of confusing reports online about taking public transportation from Auschwitz I Museum and Memorial and Auschwitz II-Birkeneau back to Krakow. There were reports about taking a public bus departing from Auschwitz 1 to Krakow, but I didn’t see any at all. I even asked around and all I saw were groups of charter bus tour companies. I decided to take the train back from Oswiecim Train Station to Krakow Glowny Railway Station.

Here’s how to get to Krakow from Auschwitz by train:

Step 1: From Auschwitz I or Auschwitz II-Birkenau, you can take a short taxi ride (15PLN ~ $4.44 USD) to Oswiecim train station. I prefer to walk from the Auschwitz 1 Memorial & Museum since it only takes 15-20 minutes to Oswiecim railway station. If you’re at Auschwitz 2 Birkenau site and you prefer to walk, I would suggest taking a free shuttle bus to Auschwitz 1 first, then walk to Oswiecim station.

Step 2: Note that the departure times from Oswiecim to Krakow Glowny are only available at: 3:41am, 4:22am, 5:03am, 5:42am, 6:51am, 8:45am, 10:51am, 12:34pm, 1:50pm, 2:38pm, 2:20pm, 4:45pm, 6:40pm, and 7:57pm.

Step 3: Buy a one-way ticket to Krakow Glowny station from the cashier for 9.50 PLN zloty ~ $2.79 USD.

Step 4: Note the time and platform of the train departing to Krakow Glowny railway station. The train departs right on time and the ride to Krakow will take 1 hour and 40 minutes (up to 2 hours).
