I have to confess… Starbucks Star

…..I am a Starbucks Star Collector.

Anytime there is a promotion which offers Bonus Stars, I sign up and then just hope I can find myself in a city with a real Starbucks store. Alas, in my small town we only have one and it is located in a local grocery store.  As it is not a stand-alone store, it typically does not participate in promotions.

Believe it or not, there are those individuals who do not know about the Bonus Stars program with Starbucks. I was talking with someone today and when I began talking about earning Stars and how one could do so quite easily, she replied with “No wonder my friend is always willing to use her app to pay for my drink!” Hopefully after we chatted, she will now be earning her own stars and her own free drinks from Starbucks!

For several years, Starbucks ran a special 12 Days of Christmas promotion offering where the company rewarded coffee drinkers for their patronage and loyalty all year long by offering fun  gifts and deals every day for 12 days in December.Starbucks-12-days-of-Giving-550x267

Then, in 2013, the unthinkable happened.  Starbucksters learned that there would be no special 12 Days of ChristmasDeal of the Day. Instead, coffee lovers were only offered two special Christmas deals each week instead of the daily deals as in past years.

This year, it looks as though Starbucks is going to run its 12 Days of Christmas again with the focus this year on earning Bonus Stars.  I received an email offering me bonus stars for purchasing one of the new Winter Drinks (my favorite is the Crème Brûlée Latte). At the bottom of the email was this graphic:

I am not sure if this is targeted, but I would think that it will be available to everyone who is registered and/or uses the Starbucks App. The app also works for purchases at Teavana Stores and you can earn Teavana Rewards.

I know not everyone uses the Starbucks app because I still see individuals pull out a Starbucks card to pay for their purchases.  If you haven’t downloaded it yet, the app is available for the iPhone (in iTunes) and for Android  (at Google Play).

  3. I was wondering about the 12 days of Christmas. I too am amazed that people don’t know about stars and promotions. Just 5 mins ago the woman in front of me ordered a holiday drink and i told her to get her sticker towards a free drink. So many people complain of how expensive Starbucks is, but with using the app, getting every 12th drink free and all the bonus star promos, it really isn’t that bad.

    • I think you are right… so many people don’t know about the bonus stars… even some who happily use the gift cards but don’t take the time to register. Maybe she will think of you now when she earns that first free drink!

  4. I received the first 5 days of emails and then strangely they stopped coming. They would always hit my inbox by 9:30 each night with the next day’s promotion so I could set a reminder on my phone, but then after day 5 nothing now for the last two nights. I thought maybe they did away with it, but I see you received yours. I’ve gotten other Starbucks emails but just not the bonus star promotion. So thanks for posting it and I’ll be waiting to see what Day 7 is. Cheers!

    • I used to think that mine came every day at the same time… typically at 9:20. But last night, the email didn’t show until almost 10! If you are not receiving your emails, I would suggest calling Starbucks at (800) 782-7282 and ask them why you aren’t getting them. They have always been more than helpful when I’ve had to call.

  5. I had been wondering when the 12 days of Bonus stars was going to start then my sis-in-law said it already had. I never received any emails or the emails with the daily promotions. I have been a Rewards member for years and have always received promotions. I emailed Starbucks and this was their reply: I am sorry that you were not able to participate in the 12 Days of Bonus Stars promotion. We want to provide you with promotions and offers that are personalized for your Starbucks experience. So the specifics of our offers, promotions and coupons vary by customer. While you may not receive a particular offer or promotion there may be another offer that is personalized for you to take advantage of.
    All they gave me was a free reward. That’s nice, but I would rather be able to get the rest of the offers for the bonus stars!

  6. I received email for day 2 then nothing. Finally called them on Sunday (day 4?) and was talked through sending an email to their “promo problem people” and was told I would hear back in 24-48 hours. Never heard back but I received my emails for the next 2 days (one of them so late in the day that even if I wanted to participate, I wasn’t going out that late at night), now nothing again. I guess I could try to find the sent email and resend it and see it I start getting my promo emails again, but that just seems like a lot of work to go spend money somewhere where they don’t seem to want me.

    • I am sorry you are having issues. I don’t think it is so much a question of their not wanting you as it is that the system definitely has glitches. I think a well-worded letter to the corporate office is in order.

  7. I never received the email to opt in to the 12 days of bonus stars either and found out from someone else that the promotion had already started. I called Starbucks customer service asking to be opted in and the rep said no. I was told that the email offers are random. I can appreciate the randomness of the number of bonus stars offered to a customer each day within the program (i.e. on Day 5 earn 2-5 stars for purchasing a lunch item), but as a registered member/regular customer I do not appreciate the company’s lack of willingness to opt a customer in to the promotion after making the effort to call customer service & specifically asking to be opted in. This does not seem like a good system to me.

    • I understand your frustration and I am so sorry this didn’t work out for you. It is the same thing I feel when I hear that targeted ‘Fly and get 3x the miles’ promotions go out from the airlines. I have never figured out how companies ‘choose’ their intended targets.

  8. I have participated in six of the bonus star promotions. So far I’ve had to call them 4 times to add the bonus stars. I’ve always waited longer than the 24 hours they say it can take for the stars to show up. Ironically it seems to be on the days that I get more than one and the bonus stars will show up on the second purchase later in the day but not on the first purchase. I just looked now in my earned star from purchasing a cookie this morning is there but the bonus isn’t. Guessing I’ll be calling them again tomorrow. My sister and one of my friends is having the same issue. I’m beginning to believe it’s just to get you in there and maybe to get you to try something new and they figure people won’t notice the stars aren’t showing up. They are always very nice and on my third call they actually did give me an extra reward but having to call almost everyday is getting old.

    • Hmmmm…..that sounds like what happens to me when I am not using a Corporate, or stand-alone store. I had to call and have the stars manually applied for the hot chocolate bonus. I am sure I will have to call again tomorrow to have today’s cookie bonus stars applied. Even though the store looks like a Starbucks and has a scanner for the app, it is located on a college campus. I went there a) because it was closer and b) to see if the bonus stars will post. I don’t mind calling and asking to have them applied manually if need be.

      • LOL I was right – Bonus star for the 2nd cookie I purchased yesterday showed up, but not the one for the first one. So I’ll call them again today. And guessing tomorrow (bought a chocolate croissant for breakfast, then when I went to get my tea refill, got an almond one to go.) Don’t want to complain too much since they don’t send promos to everyone. Don’t want to get on their “naughty list.) 🙂
        At least all of their reps are very nice and helpful (only had one that was a bit inappropriate – asked what background I was because of my last name. I didn’t care, but have been in the corporate world long enough to know you don’t ask those kinds of questions.) And he still was very nice.

  9. Man….I’m totally bummed now! I thought all my bonus points were going to be added this month of January some time…. Because I haven’t got any bonus stars just the 1st stars for the purchase. and I got all the daily emails telling me of the deals….I’m gonna have to call.

    • Sometimes calling to check is a good thing. With that being said, I logged on to my account today to add coffee codes… and I noticed a message congratulating me on completing the Star Dash and that I would be receiving an email by January 27th. I can live with that since they at least acknowledged it!
