The Sights and Sounds of Retiro in Buenos Aires

Retiro is a quiet neighborhood located in the northeastern part of Buenos Aires. Its main focal point is San Martin Square and the main train station. The Retiro train station area is one of the many hidden gems that I’ve found in Buenos Aires. If you’re in Retiro, you’re probably staying at a local hotel or hopping on mass transit, whether it is a bus, train, or subway.

Plaza San Martin is the main park area where you can relax and chill with friends. It’s most famous for the clock tower.

There’s also a Subte (pronounced in English as SUE-BAY) station conveniently located in Retiro. Subte Line C in Retiro connects to every major subway line.

During rush hour times (morning and evening work hours), it can get quite hectic with massive amount of people around the various mass transits in Retiro.

The Terminal de Omnibus is the main bus station that takes Argentines to the outskirt areas of Buenos Aires and further.

The highlight of Retiro is the main train station where commuter trains network out of Buenos Aires and beyond.

I like visiting the surrounding area of the main train station which is Retiro San Martin and Paseo de Compras because you can find really inexpensive street food, gifts, and souvenirs.

Retiro is a local’s gem and you can find markets and amazing small restaurants.

I must warn you that during the night, the area around the Retiro main train station can get kind of dangerous. Restaurants and shops don’t open after the sun sets and shady characters start hanging around the train station area at night. But, please do visit during the daytime if you have a chance.
