How to Get to Ouro Preto From Belo Horizonte Brazil

Since I was in Belo Horizonte for 4 days, I decided to take a day trip to Ouro Preto, a famous former colonial mining town. Ouro Preto which means Black Gold is a city which is 1 and a half hours away from Belo Horizonte. There’s much confusion on the internet on how to get to Ouro Preto from Belo Horizonte by bus, so I decided to write this step by step guide.

Step 1. Head to Rodoviária Tergip Ter Rod Gov Israil Pinheiro which is the central bus station located in Centro Downtown Belo Horizonte. Here’s a Google Maps link for your reference.

Step 2. Buy a one-way ticket to Ouro Preto from a company called Passaro Verde. Note that you should buy a one-way because you don’t to be committed to a specific time on the way back. You can always buy a one-way back to Belo Horizonte from the Ouro Preto bus station.

Step 3. The ticket will cost R$27.25 ~ $8.90 USD and verify that the destination at the bottom says ‘Ouro Preto’. On the back of the ticket there will be a form attached labeled Seguro Viagemtop Capemisa which is some sort of insurance included in the ticket in case of an accident. I didn’t fill it out.

Step 4. You can wait in the lobby area until you are ready to board the Passaro Verde green bus.

Step 5. After a few stops along the way and 2 hours later, you will end up at the last stop in Ouro Preto which is the central bus station, Terminal Rodoviario 8 de Julho.

If you need to use the restroom at Terminal Rodoviario 8 de Julho, it will cost R$0.50 ~ $0.16 USD. If you need to shower, it will cost R$8.00 ~ $2.61 USD.

How to Get from Ouro Preto to Belo Horizonte

Head over to the Central Bus Station at Ouro Preto’s Terminal Rodoviario 8 de Julho and buy a one-way ticket back to Belo Horizonte using the Passaro Verde company. It will drop you off at Rodoviária Tergip Ter Rod Gov Israil Pinheiro which is the last stop in Centro Downtown Belo Horizonte.

Note that you must refuse any help from the locals trying to refer you to a taxi service or even in their passenger cars. Taxis are really expensive for the 1 and a 1/2 hour to 2 hour journey from Ouro Preto to Belo Horizonte. Never step into a stranger’s passenger car if they offer you a ride back to Belo Horizonte because that can put yourself in a dangerous situation.
