I stayed at this hotel last week prior to starting my trip to Shanghai. I used 6,000 American Airlines miles to redeem for the Doubletree by Hilton Newark Airport hotel at www.useaamiles.com . The going rate was $179+tax and I definitely saved a lot of money by using my plethora of American Airlines miles. I was also a Gold Hilton HHonors member, so I called the hotel to attach my HHonors number to my third party reservation so that I could receive the elite benefits.
I flew into New York Kennedy Airport (JFK) and I needed to get to the hotel which is next to Newark’s Liberty Airport (EWR). I took the JFK Airtrain ($5.00) to Jamaica Station. From Jamaica Station, I bought a LIRR peak ticket for $9.50 one way to Penn Station. From Penn Station, I bought a ticket to EWR on the New Jersey Transit (NJ Transit) for $12.50 one way. It was definitely an expensive transfer, but well worth it since I got to enjoy the area around Penn Station before heading to EWR. The entire journey takes 1 hour to 1 and a half hours.
When you get to Newark Liberty Airport, you need to take the EWR Airtrain to P4 which is the hotel shuttle waiting area. Look for a Doubletree branded bus that comes by the P4 waiting area every 20 minutes.
I pulled up the Doubletree Newark hotel on Google Maps and found out there was a prison nearby that’s on the same street within a 5 minute walk. The shuttle arrived in a timely matter and it was a 10 minute ride to the hotel because of light traffic.
During check-in, I asked if there were any upgrades available and the front desk agent gave me a 1 king bed room with a balcony on a HHonors floor. It was way better than the 2 double beds on a standard floor which was booked via a third party so I considered it an upgrade. He advised me that since I was a HHonors Gold member, I would be getting free Wi-Fi in addition to a breakfast buffet voucher. I also received a hot fresh homemade signature Doubletree chocolate chip cookie.
The interiors of the Doubletree Newark hotel had balconies facing inward towards the atrium of the lobby. Needless to say, I didn’t see anyone hanging out in their balcony rooms.
I entered the room and found it to be quite adequate in terms of space. The room consisted of a king size bed, roomy executive desk, TV, chair, two bottles of water and a balcony.
The bathroom was very tiny and had the usual Doubletree Citron amenities.
The outdoor balcony architecture view was pretty weird with a lot of arch support showing which makes it an eyesore.
The view below wasn’t that much better with an out of order small pool area.
I only slept for a few hours since I had a lot of work to catch up on. The rooms are spacious and clean, but the bathroom is tiny! The WiFi was slow at times, but picked up when guests went to bed. I didn’t partake in the breakfast buffet since I had an early flight out to Chicago the next morning. The shuttle to the airport leaves every 20 minutes and is operated 24/7. It only took the shuttle drive 5 minutes to get to the airport since I had a 6am flight. I would recommend this hotel if you need a place to sleep since it’s a no frills airport hotel.
