The Sights and Sounds of the Rocinha Favela Children in Rio de Janeiro

A lot of favelas in Rio de Janeiro are still prominently run by drug lords. According to my local favela tour guide Eddie, he said they mostly start out as children. He said that growing up in a favela as a child is tough burdened by limited resources and poverty. The good thing about Rocinha is that it’s in a favela revolution. Many good changes are happening and they mostly impact children.

Rocinha has schools, day care, after school programs, extra-circular activities, a gym, and pool. My guide Eddie absolutely loves Rocinha and its beloved children. He believes that children are the future and that they can change and be good citizens.

The Rocinha favela children use this art studio to express themselves. Local t-shirts and paintings come from this art studio.

Day care centers are very important because parents work outside of Rocinha and need assistance with taking care of their child.

I also had the pleasure of listening to samba from the children of Rocinha.
