The standalone Admiral’s Club lounge in Galeao International Airport (GIG) recently closed and the American Airlines Admiral’s Club re-emerged as a shared lounge with the GOL Smiles VIP Lounge in Terminal 2. When you clear security in Rio de Janeiro International Airport, follow the signs for VIP Lounges and you will take an escalator downstairs.

You will see a sign for the GOL Smiles VIP Lounge and don’t panic if you don’t see the American Airlines affiliation on the outside.
When you step inside the lounge, you will see a front desk counter. Tell them that you want to access the Admiral’s Club and they will direct you to the left side of the GOL VIP Lounge.
I asked the front desk attendant about this whole set up and he said the other side is for the GOL VIP Lounge and the food is identical. There is also free wifi throughout the whole club.
The Admiral’s Club was relatively empty when I arrived in the evening for a flight to Miami.
There was a small bar area with plenty of alcoholic and soft drinks.
The food was pretty paltry as it consisted of small chicken and cheese bites along with tomato soup.

There’s not a whole lot to do in Terminal 2 of GIG Rio de Janeiro International Airport. The whole airport terminal is dismal with only 1 restaurant and two gift shops, so this lounge is the best option for an escape to relax and catch up on work.
