The Yuyuan Garden or also known as the Yu Garden is a Chinese garden located in the Old City. The Yuyuan garden is surrounded by an enormous open-air bazaar called the Yuyuan Tourist Mart. It’s also home of the famous Nanxiang Steamed Buns Restaurant where I will cover in a later segment. In this bazaar, you can find great gifts and souvenirs at great prices.

I took the Shanghai metro Line 10 and got off at the Yuyuan Garden station.
From the metro station, it was a short 10 minute walk through the cold and wet streets of Shanghai to the Yuyuan Tourist Mart.
The Yuyuan Tourist Mart is lined up with restaurants, street food, and shops. It’s so touristy that it has a Starbucks coffee shop.
The great thing about the Yu Garden is that locals and tourists love this place. It’s a great place to people watch and relax by watching the fishes swim in the water.
There are two attractions in the Yuyuan Garden which is the Yu Garden itself and the City of God Temple. Both attractions require a small payment at the ticket window.
On the other side of the Yu Garden is an outdoor food hall. I will cover this food market in a later post, but I want to give you an overview of what it looks like. Basically, most of the Shanghai specialties are located here, including stinky tofu.
The real shopping gem is not inside the Yuyuan bazaar, but outside in the surrounding streets where you can find a shop that sells everything for 2 Yuan each. That comes out to be ~ 33 cents USD for each item in the store.
There are also adjacent alleys where you can find items for sale on the black market. The items are lined up outside on the floor and haggling is expected.
