The Sights and Sounds of Shilin Night Market in Taipei

As you may know, eating is one of my favorite things to do when I travel and during my time in Taipei, I was infatuated with the night markets. There are a lot of night markets in Taipei and the most famous one that tourists flock to is the Shilin Night Market. I had never been to a night market in my life and since it was the most famous, I had to go there first to check out what it was all about.

I hopped on the mass rapid transit and got off at Jiantan MRT station located in the Shilin district of Taipei in Taiwan. The Shilin Night Market was a three minute walk north of Jiantan MRT station.

The Shilin Night Market is divided into three parts, the covered area, the exterior street area, and the main interior area. I visited the covered area first where it seemed more like a traditional farmer’s market.

The best part about the Shilin Night Market is going to the exterior street area where you get to hear the hustle and bustle of street vendors amongst the large crowd.

You will find all sorts of vendors selling typical Taiwanese street food and drink.

Walking towards the main interior area, you can find more street food.

I stopped by a stall for some famous Lu Rou Fan (Taiwanese meat sauce with rice) and oyster omelette which was absolute delicious.

In the main interior area, you can find more street food and you must be wary pickpockets because of the heavy crowds.

Not only can you find food at the Shilin Night Market, but you can also do some shopping for clothes and DVDs. Be aware that the clothing is cheap and the DVDs are mostly counterfeit.

You can definitely spend all night at the Shilin Night Market because it not only caters to foodies and shoppers. Kids and adults alike can also be entertained with many carnival style games.

If you’ve never been to a night market and you’re planning on a trip to Taipei, you should definitely check out the Shilin Night Market. I will cover some of the lesser known night markets in the next few installments, but it’s a definitely a must visit.
