Today, I’ll be embarking on an 11 day trip through Mexico, Ecuador, Peru and Cuba. I’ll be spending 1 day in Mexico City, 1 day in Quito, 1 day in Guayaquil, 2 days in Lima, and 6 days in Havana. This will be my first major trip of 2015 through Latin America.
For this spring break trip, I used a combination of four different award tickets on four different airline carriers. I used a Business ExtrAA certificate + $30 of taxes to book a one-way economy award ticket from Los Angeles to Mexico City via Phoenix (LAX-PHX-MEX) on US Airways. I used 10,000 United miles and $130.62 of taxes to book a one-way economy award ticket from Mexico to Lima via Bogota with less than 24 hour layovers in Quito and Guayaquil (MEX-BOG-UIO-GYE-LIM) on Avianca. I used 25,000 British Airways Avios and $70 in taxes to book a round-trip coach award ticket between Lima and Havana on LAN Airlines. I used 15,000 AA miles and $53.84 to book a one-way economy class award ticket from Lima to Los Angeles via Dallas Fort Worth (LIM-DFW-LAX) on American Airlines.
My entire routing looks like this: LAX-PHX-MEX-BOG-UIO-GYE-LIM-HAV-LIM-DFW-LAX
In total, I used an expiring Business ExtrAA certificate, 50,000 miles across various frequent flyer programs, and $284.46 in taxes.
It’ll be my first time in Ecuador and Cuba which I’m super excited about.

Wow! Do you think you will experience ANYthing on this trip, except for Havana — a wonderful city in a wonderful country?
I guess everybody has their own b way of travelling, and you are choosing your own (flight) path. I would imagine a month or two would be enough to barely scratch the surface of the huge variety of cultures you’ll be bypassing.

Mick, I’ve been to Mexico City probably 10 times in my life already. It’s my favorite country so far and 12 hours in Mexico City isn’t too bad. As for Ecuador, I’m taking advantage of <24 hr layovers and you're right – I'm not going to fully experience Ecuador in 2 days, but at least I'll get a glimpse of it. As for Lima, I've been there 10 times as well and it's my starting point for travel to Cuba.
