Help Me Plan My Vacation – Part 1, Singapore

Maxwell Road Hawker Centre

In December I’ll be taking an amazing vacation to 5 different countries.  The first stop will be in Singapore.  I had previously planned to stay at the Sheraton Towers using Cash and Points (you can see a detailed trip itinerary here) but decided to switch over to the Marriott Hotel using points only to save on out-of-pocket expenses.  After visiting a few other countries, I will then have a 2-day layover in Singapore and I will stay at the St Regis hotel.

I’ve been to Singapore one time before – 4 years ago – but only spent 2 days there.  There are a few things I know I want to do while in Singapore.  First is the Night Safari, that’s a can’t miss for Singapore.  Second is the Maxwell Road Hawker Centre.  I absolutely want to taste all of the great delicacies on hand at Hawker.

The question is, what else should I do in Singapore?  I will have a total of 4 days to see the sights and experience the local food.    I’d love as many suggestions as you have!

  1. I just got back from Singapore in April and had a blast. Definitely try all the foods at the hawker station. Kevin and I had all our meals there. Food was delicious and MUCH cheaper than restaurants. You have to see the Merlion and also check out the Marina Bay Sands Casino for a bit. The roof top offers some amazing views of the city & the pool is quite stunning. If you’re the walking type, we walked all the way from the Sheraton to Orchard road, then all the way to Merlion park. It was a long walk but very scenic and you hit all the tourist spots. There’s also a great museum by Marina Bay sands… I’m not a museum person by any means but I REALLY enjoyed it (spent 5 hours)… They had a great titanic exhibit/tribute when I was there. Have a blast!! Also be sure to try everyyyything foodwise. I loved the Roti canai, kangkong, crab, etc…

  2. If you like history (or it is just TOO hot) the Singapore museum is pretty well done.

  3. @Angelina – I’ve read your posts on your trip. It looked amazing. I for sure want to check out the Marina Bay Sands roof top. I just saw a special on how they built it!

  4. hi, i am malaysian married to a singaporean. be sure to try the chili crab, its their specialty. They are also well known for their Hainanese chicken rice and Katong laksa (go to Joo Chiat street for this). Check out Mustapha store in Little India for everything you need and don’t need. Go to the pool in Marina Bay Sands (you need to stay there). If you have some time and want to escape all things modern, head over to Pulau Ubin (Ubin Island), perhaps the only undeveloped part of singapore. You have a take a boat ride for this. The hsbc capony walk is also very nice and you get to experience local neightbourhoods on your way there. Chinese Garden is also very pleasant. Of course, don’t miss out the standard stuff like Orchard Road, the zoo, sentosa etc.

  5. @Sueanne, thanks, these are great suggestions!

  6. Check out little India! Great hawker center right by the metro stop with fantastic Indian food. Good for a wander around the shops too.

Things to eat in Singapore: pepper crab, hainan chicken rice, roti prata are my favorites.

  7. Hey Stacey, I just sent a ridiculously detailed email of what I found in my research for when I head that way in May (hopefully – nothing booked yet). Hope it helps a little.

  8. Chinatown is fun to visit. You can see a Hindu temple and a Buddhist one near there. The mall by the metro stop has a whole floor with foot massage shops, which I highly recommend as well.

Running parallel to Buffalo Road in Little India (across the street from the Little India Hawker center) is a small area serving delicious south indian treats to a mostly south indian clientele.

There you’ll find a big pot of heavenly Masala Milk – a sweet yellow concoction made of milk, aromatic spices, and nuts, served piping hot. I found myself going back again and again. Couldn’t get enough of the stuff.

Here’s a streetview shot of the spot so you know what to look for: http://snipurl.com/24p7mg5

  10. Mustafa Centre, a 24-hour supermarket, with an emphasis on products from South Asia (the centre is located in Little India). Or, if you collect currency, the folks in the booths downstairs can help you out in that vein…

  11. I’m Singaporean. I’ll just say that you can find good food at just about any corner in Singapore 🙂

My sister and i spent a great couple of days in Singapore. It was so humid (and we are girls from Northern Australia!) in November, so plan a few inside activities.
We really loved the Zoo and di breakfast there. Sentosa is lovely and we went over on a cable car. Went to the aquarium there, had loads of fun. They have bulit a huge fun park there now so it is very touristy.
Eat, eat lots. I love a trip planed arounf food!

  14. Eating Experience: Ku De Ta http://www.marinabaysands.com/Singapore-Restaurants/Fine-Dining/KU-DE-TA/ The location in Bali is still my favorite, but the food is still first class coupled with amazing sights from the top of the hotel.

Drinking Experience: The Long Bar at the Raffles Hotel for a Singapore Sling…soak up the heritage! http://www.raffles.com/singapore/restaurants-and-bars/long-bar/

The Night Safari…always an amazing experience.
