What Makes A Great Hotel Room?

What makes a great hotel room? Or, what makes a hotel room great? No matter how you ask the question, you’re bound to get a variety of different answers.

I think one thing that everyone will agree on is cleanliness – a clean room and bathroom are a must.  But then what else makes a great room?  Here’s what I think:

Plenty of Electrical Outlets – in today’s wired age, we’re carrying more and more gadgets and they all need a charge.  Personally, I think it’s critical that there’s at least 1 plug near the bed or nightstand so that I can use my phone as an alarm as well.

Plastic drinking cups – if you’re a fan of The Travel Channel’s Hotel Impossible and Anthony Melchiori, you know how important those little plastic cups are now.  For those of you who haven’t caught the show (and if you haven’t, you need to) hotel glassware is often not cleaned or cleaned with dirty towels. Some states, like California, have made providing plastic cups a law.

Comfortable bed – I don’t need a W bed at every hotel, but a bed should be comfortable enough to sleep in – and bed bug free.

Locks – a room needs to have a door that locks. Safety is key.  You think that’s an obvious item, but I was in a hotel in Hong Kong where there were no obvious locks – the hotel said “the doors locked automatically.” Eh, not good enough in my book.

What do you think makes a great hotel room?

  1. For me it has to be clean.

  2. toilet paper

  3. To me a great hotel room is also about location within the hotel/resort. A great hotel room is near amenities, but not too close, has a great view, etc.

A great room needs to be quiet at night to get a good night sleep.

  5. Good lighting is also important

  6. A comfortable chair so I don’t have to prop myself up on the bed.

  7. Blackout curtains so that I can sleep well!

  8. I value a good bed with plenty of pillows.

  9. Starts with clean…

  10. A room with AC that will go to 66 degrees.

  11. A good hotel room is clean and safe. A great hotel room has a view and amenities you can’t find at home.

  12. A great location and a great view make a hotel room great

  13. USB outlets, free wifi and an iron make for a great room

  14. Like you mentioned, a great room needs to have smartly-placed electrical outlets – particularly around the bed for charging cell phones.

  15. Strong and consistent Wifi

  16. Besides the cleanliness issue, I like a room big enough so I don’t have to squeeze past my suitcase if I’m not totally unpacking. I prefer a shower/tub combo (though unlike one recent experience, the tub should be wide enough for me to stand with my feet shoulder-width apart!) but if it’s just a shower, then some sort of bench/stool/wall cutout so I can shave my legs more easily! Plenty of plugs and good, strong, FREE wi-fi that doesn’t require a new login each day. Of course a comfortable bed with ample pillows is also a requirement!

  17. For me, the single most important things is the curtains. The curtains need to be thick enough to keep the sun light out so the room stays dark enough for good rest.

Clean, smells good,, lots of light and a comfy chair or couch with something for me to put my feet up on. And not near the elevator or on ground floor.

  19. Clean and plenty of electrical outlets, for sure. However, individual climate control for the room is a must. It is hard to relax in a room that feels either too hot or too cold.

Like others have said it had to be clean but it also has to work. Don’t give me amenities or say I have X and then put me in a room where X does not work or is not available.

  21. Clean, comfy bug free bed, locks, and quiet during “normal” sleeping times.

  22. Comfortable bed and rain shower!

  23. A quiet air conditioner!

  24. Clean, own bathroom and no bugs
