Trip Report: My Rio de Janeiro Brazil Mileage Run Vacation

This Sunday, I’m about to embark on a long mileage run vacation. I took advantage of a mistake fare from Orlando to Rio de Janeiro (MCO-GIG) for $388. What I mean by a long mileage run vacation is not the short 34 hour stay in Rio, but my long journey to get from Los Angeles and back. I bought a positioning flight from Los Angeles to Orlando (LAX-MCO) and that cost more than the MCO-GIG international portion!

My segment looks something like this: LAX-MCO-DFW-MIA-GIG-MIA-DFW-MCO-LAX for under $800. I would be earning 16,972 elite qualifying miles at 4.7 cents per mile which is not bad at all for a summer fare to Rio. I also used two American Airlines systemwide upgrades to upgrade my cheap coach fare into Business Class. I’m excited about this trip and can’t wait to spend 34 hours in Rio. I’m only staying for one night at the Sheraton Rio so I’ll be mostly sleeping on a three red eye flights which I am dreading! #teamnosleep .
