The Sights and Sounds of Centro Historico in Mexico City Part 2

I’ve previously written about the Sights and Sounds of Centro Historico in Mexico City. This is Part 2 which will focus on other sights I wandered across around the historic center of Mexico City. It’s easy to get to the Centro Historico by taxi, Metro, metrobus, or by foot because it’s literally in the center of the city.

I started off my journey to the Centro Historico from Avenida Paseo de La Reforma. I saw lots of people protesting the metro fare hike that was about to take place later in the week. The metro fare went up in mid-December of 2013 from 3 pesos to 5 pesos which is a significant hike to the poor.

There were even taco vendors amidst the protestors selling 7 tacos for 10 pesos (~$0.75 USD) which is the cheapest deal I’ve ever seen in Mexico City.

The protestors even poured out to the front of my hotel at the Le Meridien Mexico City. Thankfully there were police in riot gear, but the protestors were calm.

From my hotel, it was only a 10 minute walk on Avenida Paseo de La Reforma to the historic center.

In Parque Alemeda Central, there is a beautiful monument called Hemiciclo A Juarez.

Nearby is the famous Palacio de Bellas Artes which is the Palace of Fine Arts.

I walked along Avenida Juarez is a pedestrian only walkway towards the Zocalo. My favorite restaurant on Avenida Juarez is Tacos de Canasta Los Especiales which offers 5 different types of tacos for 5 pesos each. Each order comes with two tacos.

At the end of Avenida Juarez is the famous Zocalo in the historic city center of Mexico City. Christmas decorations were set up around the main government square.
