Cariocas absolutely love soccer and they’re blessed with the world famous Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. The new stadium had just been finished remodeling for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and I found out there was a Vasco v. Flamengo match going on that day, so I decided to check it out.

The best way to get to Maracana Stadium is by Rio de Janeiro’s subway where you can get off at the Maracana metro station.
The official name of Maracana Stadium is called Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho.
You can pick up your tickets at will call or purchase them at the ticket window.
The stadium was massive on the outside with many different entrances depending on where you are seated.
Street traffic was horrible and everyone was pretty much dressed up in their respective team’s clothing.
There was even a news reporter onsite and a street vendor selling World Cup gear.
A lot of stadium security, private security, police, and military police were on hand because this was a big match between the Vasco and Flamengo soccer teams.
