I took a public bus in Rio de Janeiro from the Barra de Tijuca neighborhood to Central for 3 Brazilian reais ~ $1.22 USD. For your information, the price is now 3.20 reais since the price increase went in effect in the beginning of June 2014. I didn’t have a chance to visit the Lapa neighborhood last year when I went to Rio de Janeiro for the first time. The Lapa neighborhood is located adjacent to Centro Rio de Janeiro.

I got off next to the Cinelandia metro subway station which is in the heart of Rio de Janeiro’s Central neighborhood. It was a 5 minute walk to the famous Arcos de Lapa (Lapa Arches).
The Lapa neighborhood is bordered by Centro Rio de Janeiro and is perched on a hill.
The streets of Lapa are quiet during the daytime, but very lively during the night time. Lapa is the place to party, drink beer, and dance to samba music all night long.
One of the most interesting features of the streets of Lapa is the vast amount of beautiful local street art.
You can find many local restaurants in Lapa serving Brazilian food called lanchonetes. Even though the neighborhood is literally covered with graffiti and street art, that’s what makes Lapa, Lapa.
Be aware that Lapa is a very impoverished neighborhood and don’t linger in the alleyways during the night time. Some people say Lapa is dangerous, but I found it perfectly safe during the day time with locals hanging out with friends.
Most tourists go to Lapa to see the famous Escadaria Selaron (Selaron Steps) which is a world famous staircase in Rio de Janeiro.
