Trip Report: My South America Mileage Run Vacation to Porto Alegre Brazil

I will be embarking on a 6 day trip this afternoon to Sao Paulo, Porto Alegre, and Rio de Janeiro. Last year I booked three trips to Brazil and I’ve recently flown the first two in the past two months. See My South America Mileage Run Vacation To Foz Do Iguacu Brazil and My South America Mileage Run Vacation To Puerto Iguazu Argentina.

Introduction to Porto Alegre

My third trip (this trip) was to Foz do Iguacu again, but I had already seen the Brazilian side and the Argentinian side of the waterfalls. I wanted to go somewhere new in Brazil and found a cheap fare to Porto Alegre from Foz do Iguacu. I will be spending 10 hours in Sao Paulo during a layover, 3 days in Porto Alegre, and  a 22 hour layover in Rio de Janeiro. This will be my first time to Porto Alegre and I’m excited to visit a new Brazilian state, Rio Grande do Sul.

I will be flying on LAN Airlines and TAM Airlines through South America and the cost of the ticket was $450.76 to Foz do Iguacu. My nested Porto Alegre trip from Foz do Iguacu cost was $136.31. My routing looks something like this: LAX-SCL-GRU-IGU-GRU-POA-GRU-IGU-GIG-SCL-LAX

I’ll be crediting my miles towards American Airlines and with the reduced LATAM intra-South American mileage earnings, I’ll be earning a total of 15,978 miles at a rate of 3.6 cpm.

It’s going to be a fast paced whirlwind of a trip where I’ll be hopping from segment to segment between three different cities in Brazil in a short amount of time. These are the trips I live for and as always, I will be sharing my adventure with you guys on my social media channels.
