My First Puerto Rico Mileage Run Vacation on American Airlines

I booked several $266-$300 mileage runs earlier in the year from Los Angeles to Puerto Rico for travel in May, June, and September. These mileage runs are key in my quest for American Airline Executive Platinum requalification. This will be my first series of my mileage run vacations to Puerto Rico. I have been to Puerto Rico only once prior to this trip. Last year, I stayed in Old San Juan and this year, I wanted to try different parts of Puerto Rico. On this trip, I chose Ponce and it’s a ninety minute drive from San Juan Airport.

Introduction to Puerto Rico
Sheraton JFK Airport Hotel Review
mini NYC DO at City Lobster Manhattan
The Sights and Sounds of New York City
Hilton Ponce Golf and Casino Resort Hotel Review
The Sights and Sounds of Plaza Las Delicias in Ponce Puerto Rico
The Sights and Sounds of El Centro Ponce Puerto Rico
The Various Eats in Ponce Puerto Rico

My routing for this trip is LAX-JFK-SJU-MIA-LAX. I got upgraded on every segment to First and Business Class. Domestic Business Class and First Class is nothing to rave about on American Airlines, so I will not be reviewing my flights on this trip report. Airline food pictures are posted on my personal Twitter and Instagram accounts if you are interested.

Last week, I planned a mini-DO for NYC on Twitter and it gained a ton of interest, but my mileage run routing only gave me a 50 minute layover. I turned a 50 minute layover into a 17 hour layover by changing my 11pm LAX-JFK flight into a 7am flight. This is one of the perks of being an Executive Platinum on American Airlines. The ability to same day confirm or same day standby for an earlier flight gives you more bang for your buck and more time in the intermediate connection cities.

  1. You paid to make that flight change, right? American doesn’t offer free SDC even for EXPs.

    • actually, I tweeted @AmericanAir and they got me on the 7am flight for free since I was worried about missing a tight connection. Yes, you’re right about no free SDC since it’s $75 for EXPS… I would’ve made the 7am flight if I did a free same day standby since it wasn’t oversold, but I probably wouldn’t have gotten the upgrade.
