The Sights and Sounds of Chapinero in Bogota

Chapinero is a middle class neighborhood in Bogota located north of La Candelaria. After I left my hotel at the La Candelaria neighborhood and ended up at Chapinero, I had finally found out where most of the Colombian city-dwellers lived. The Chapinero neighborhood is filled with high rise luxury apartments surrounded by many restaurants, bars, boutique shops, and shopping malls.

As you can see, there is a huge difference between La Candelaria and Chapinero. The streets are modern with high rise apartments.

Chapinero is known to be home of many universities, one of which is the Universidad Santo Tomas.

During the lunch hour, many office workers come out to have lunch in various restaurants in Chapinero.

Crepes and Waffles, a local chain restaurant that started in Bogota was the most popular with busy executives lining up outside.

Colombians absolutely love coffee and there is a huge Juan Valdez Café in Chapinero.

Chapinero is also home to the biggest private gym in Bogota, which is called the Gimnasio Moderno.

You can also find many green parks such as Parque Leon de Greiff.

As with all middle class neighborhoods, there are always beggars and street performers working the side of the road for money.
