I Booked a Flight to the Most Dangerous Country in the World

So far this year I’ve kept my promise on avoiding traveling to Western European countries. Last night, I came close to booking a mistake fare to Lisbon for $450, but there were too many intangibles such as a 7 day minimum, flights operated on US Airways that aren’t Systemwide Upgradeable, and dates that really didn’t work out for me. Instead, I used the last of my Delta Skymiles and booked an award ticket to San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

According to Business Insider, Honduras is the most dangerous country on the planet. A few weeks ago, I visited Guatemala (another dangerous country) and it wasn’t so bad at all. Last year, I traveled to Palestine in the West Bank, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro (and visited a favela), Colombia, and have been to Mexico multiple times.

I’ve been doing some research on San Pedro Sula, Honduras and couldn’t find much on TripAdvisor. In fact, the forums were pretty barren and I am a huge fan of TripAdvisor for advice. There are only 193 forum topics and the 15th post dates back to August of 2013.

I mainly want to try some authentic Honduran cuisine and explore some of the cultural aspects of Honduras. As an added bonus, I can check off an additional country off my list.

There isn’t much to do in San Pedro Sula (so they say), but staying there for three days will definitely give me a feel for the city. My trip begins in a little over a month and I can’t wait to share my experiences with you.

  1. Should go to Tegucigalpa. My mother was born there while my grandmother was working at the American school there, so we went to visit 7-8 years ago when they had a big anniversary for many of the old teachers and to see the city. Was actually a pretty interesting city with some nice landscapes. The landing at Tegucigalpa is quite interesting too with a 90 deg turn right before some mountains and into the runway haha.
