Trip Report: My Mileage Run Vacation to Buenos Aires and Mexico City

Back in November of last year, there was an amazing deal to Buenos Aires, Argentina for $129.46 taxes included. The catch is that it originated from Mexico City, so I would have to position myself from Los Angeles. This was an amazing deal because all the segments were on LAN Airlines which is a oneworld partner and the miles could be credited to American Airlines.

I booked two of these fares back in November 2013 for travel in January (this trip) and March of 2014. I used 20,000 Avios for a round-trip flight on Alaska Airlines from LAX-MEX. The routing was MEX-LIM-EZE-LIM-MEX.

I earned 100% EQM’s (elite qualifying miles) on MEX-LIM and LIM-MEX. The intra-South American flights only earned 25% EQM’s which were LIM-EZE and EZE-LIM. I earned a total of 6,258 EQM’s for $129.46 at a rate of 2cpm which was still unbelievable.

In the beginning, I had a 6 hour layover in Mexico and spend a night in Lima. Then I spent three nights and four days in Buenos Aires which was followed by another overnight in Lima. I continued my journey and spent two nights in Mexico City. I know I visit Mexico City a lot, but there is so much to explore and I’m constantly discovering new experiences to share. In addition, this was my first time in Buenos Aires and I hope you enjoy this multi-installment trip report.
