In March 2014, I spent a total of 2 nights and 3 days in Mexico City – Trip Report: My Mileage Run Vacation to Mexico City, Lima, Buenos Aires, and Santiago (work in progress)

As a single traveler, I’ve never once felt threatened on the streets of Mexico City. I’ve been to pretty much every major neighborhood of Mexico City as you can see within the depth of my trip reports. I’ve taken the subway from Mexico City International Airport to the city center numerous times and almost use the metro exclusively when getting from point A to point B.

The people of Mexico City just mind their own business and go on with their daily lives keeping it to themselves. I’ve been approached a few times by strangers asking for directions because they’ve mistaken me for a local. The only other times I’ve been approached is when someone is trying to sell me something.

It’s perfectly safe to walk in Mexico City throughout the daytime and to an extent at night, but don’t go out in the rural areas. As I’ve said previously, I feel really safe in Mexico City and I believe it’s safer than my hometown of Los Angeles. Don’t miss out on this extremely underrated city immersed with culture.
