Trip Report: My Mileage Run Vacation to Mexico City, Lima, Buenos Aires, and Santiago

Today, I embarked on a crazy 5 day mileage run vacation that involves me stepping out of the airport into Mexico City in Mexico, Lima in Peru, Buenos Aires in Argentina, and Santiago in Chile. I booked a round-trip LAN MEX-EZE fare for $129 (taxes included) and used 20,000 Avios for LAX-MEX round-trip. This is pretty much a Part 2 of the crazy $129 LAN mistake fare, but with a few twists. Check out my full trip report of Part 1 of my mileage run vacation to Mexico City and Buenos Aires.

My first leg is LAX-MEX on Alaska airlines where I will spend 18 hours in Mexico City before heading to Lima. In Lima, I will have a short 6 hour layover where I plan on heading into the city for some local Peruvian food. I will then fly Aeromexico from Lima to Buenos Aires where I will spend two nights in the city. I will then fly LAN from Buenos Aires to Santiago where I have a 10 hour layover and venture into the city. Then, I will fly LAN from Santiago to Mexico City where I will spend 24 hours and overnight before catching a super early flight back to Los Angeles on Alaska Airlines.

My complete trip will look like this: LAX-MEX-LIM-EZE-SCL-MEX-LAX

I will be earning 2,629 Delta Skymiles miles on MEX-LIM. I will earn 500 AA miles (25% intra-South America) on LIM-EZE, 500 AA miles (25% intra-South America) on EZE-SCL, and 4,085 AA miles on SCL-MEX. In total, I will be earning 7,714 (2,629 on Delta and 5,085 on AA) miles at a rate of 1.6cpm. In reality, I don’t care about Delta MQM’s, so I’m just going to be earning 5,085 EQM’s on AA at a rate of 2.5cpm which is still not bad.

Factoring my 100% Delta Gold Medallion bonus, I will be earning 2,629 MQM’s and 5,258 redeemable Skymiles (worth $52.58 at 1cpm). I will also be receiving 100% bonus miles since I am an American Airlines Executive Platinum member. I will earn 5,085 EQM’s and 10,516 redeemable miles on American Airlines which I value at $210.32 at 2cpm).

Basically, I spent $129 on this crazy LAN MEX-EZE mistake fare and I’ve earned back almost $262.90 worth of redeemable miles. No wonder the airline hates mileage runners.
