Twelve at Hengshan Shanghai Hotel Review

The Twelve at Hengshan hotel is part of Starwood’s Luxury Collection and is located in the French Concession neighborhood of Shanghai. I didn’t think about booking this hotel as part of my stay initially, but I splurged on redeeming 6,000 Starpoints and $110 in cash after the Starwood March 1st devaluations. Before March 1st, there was no cash and points availability at the old rate (4,800 Starpoints + $90), but cash and points opened up after March 1st, so I was stuck paying the new rate. I used cash and points because the rate was over $300.

I took the Shanghai metro and got off at the Hengshan Road station which was a less than a minute walk to the hotel. As you can see, it was a cold and rainy afternoon in Shanghai.

This hotel was recently opened, so everything was basically brand new and the lobby was very upscale.

The front desk agent advised me that I was upgraded to a Grand suite. I actually used a Suite Night Award and it was confirmed five days prior. I took the 500 Starpoints since I wanted to grab breakfast the next morning in town instead of eating at the hotel. He presented a welcome to me which stated that there was happy hour for SPG Platinums in the lobby lounge from 6-8pm and 2 pieces of complimentary items for press. Note that the letter also states “free minibar” which includes soft drinks and local beer.

Here’s a video tour I made of my Grand suite:

The living room was large and contained a TV with a large TV with a BOSE sound system, executive desk, three seating areas (living room, circular middle, and couch in the back).

There was a welcome amenity bottle of wine, chocolates, and fruit waiting for me on the coffee table.

There was more seating in the bedroom area with a king sized bed.

The bathroom had a double basin sink with Hermes amenities. There was also a rainforest showerhead with large soaking bathtub and a TV screen.

The best part about the room was the outdoor balcony that I had trouble accessing (see video), but it had a plush chair and a magnificent outdoor view of the interiors of the hotel.

I went for happy hour at the Lobby Lounge (access only for SPG Platinums) and had a beer with a bowl of Shanghai noodles.

Having stayed at the top four Starwood hotels in Shanghai so far, it was definitely hard for me to pick because each hotel had its pros and cons. I would stay at this hotel again in a heartbeat because the location is more intimate and away from the hustle and bustle of the city of Shanghai. I love how the suite was spacious and of course the newness of the hotel helps. The service was fantastic from the get-go and I would definitely recommend this hotel if you’re spending more than 2 nights in Shanghai.
