Finnair HEL-JFK A330-300 Business Class

I was lucky and got opped up from coach to business class on Finnair from Helsinki to New York’s Kennedy airport. This was mainly due to coach being oversold and of course my status as an oneworld emerald (top tier elite status) helped tremendously. In October of last year, I wrote an article on How to Score an Operational Upgrade Using Your Elite Status.

Finnair HEL-JFK A330-300 Business Class

This was my first time flying in the business class cabin onboard Finnair’s Airbus A330-300. The business class cabin is staggered in a 2-2-2 configuration.

I was in seat 3D which was in the middle with direct aisle access. The hard product consisted of a lie flat seat with an onboard in-flight entertainment TV screen.

There was also an amenity kit which was packaged in eco-friendly recyclable paper. In addition, there was a head-set and a bottle of water.

The seat also featured a proprietary head-set adapter, power outlet, USB port, and strangely an Ethernet port. There was no international Wi-Fi onboard, so I’m not sure why there is a need for an Ethernet port. Perhaps you can share computer files with friends and play TCP/IP network games onboard the plane?

The flight attendant offered me champagne in a beautiful glass as a pre-departure beverage.

After climbing above 30,000 feet in the air, the flight attendant passed out business class menus. The menu reads as follows:

Lunch

To start: Amouse bouche – blue cheese and figs

Appetizer choices – Garden salad and Nordic hand peeled shrimps and avocado puree OR Creamy Jerusalem artichoke and apple soup, served with warm bread

Entrée choices – Pan seared Arctic char in white wine sauce, roasted black salsify and Lappish almond potatoes OR Pan fried reindeer fillet in game sauce, mushroom ravioli and fried ceps OR Tortellini filled with mascarpone cheese and sun dried tomatoes

Dessert – Cheeses – Aura blue cheese, black label Emmental OR Haagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream OR Petit fours / Coffee or tea

Light Meal

Roasted beef with noodle salad, sesame oil vinaigrette / Fresh fruit / Finnish cinnamon buns / Coffee or tea

Sweets, snacks, coffee, or tea? Anytime!

Throughout the flight we offer a variety of snacks and sweets for you to enjoy.

Feel free to choose from nuts and almonds, biscuits, chocolates, noodles, potato chips and fruits.

We also serve espresso and cappuccino and carry a selection of delicious organic teas.

The flight attendant started out the meal service with the Amouse bouche which consisted of blue cheese and figs. This was my first time ever having an Amouse bouche which I downed in one bite. I’m not sure if it was barbaric to do that since there was a toothpick.

I had a mimosa as my in-flight beverage since they didn’t have cranberry juice onboard.

finnairheljfk11

As a starter, I had the Nordic hand peeled shrimps and avocado puree which was served with a garden salad and bread. The Nordic shrimps were small but was given a generous portion and the avocado puree made it taste heavenly.

As an entrée, I had the Pan fried reindeer fillet in game sauce which was delicious. It was my first time having reindeer ever and it tasted gamey like lamb.

finnairheljfk13

For dessert, I had the Petit fours with coffee which was delicious and a great way to end a meal.

After lunch, I watched a movie in the lie flat position and fell asleepfinnairheljfk16

I woke up a few hours later and felt a little bit hungry. I had a delicious mini size cup of noodles and went back to bed.

finnairheljfk17

90 minutes before arrival, the flight attendant served a light meal which was Roasted beef with noodle salad, and sesame oil vinaigrette. In addition, it was plated with bread, butter, and fresh fruit.

finnairheljfk18

For dessert, I had a delicious Finnish cinnamon bun which was to die for. Think Cinnabon but 10 times better.

I had the best service from my flight attendant who was attentive throughout the entire flight. My drinks were constantly being refilled and the food was outstanding. The lie flat seats were amazing along with the in-flight entertainment options. There were plenty of movies, music, TV shows, and games to keep me entertained. Finnair has a amazing Business class hard product on the HEL-JFK/JFK-HEL route onboard the Airbus A333.

  1. Looks like the food was great!

  2. Last October did the same flight, only regret was not the new biz configuration, however I tottally agree with you in everything you posted. Superb cabin service, flavor and food presentation, beautiful modern glassware, wine list…etc

  3. Hi,
Do you have the wine list ?
    Thank you.

  4. Great TR, thanks for posting! Yes I agree, Finnair has a pretty good product.

    Actually the new Business Class configuration.isn’t 2-2-2, it’s 2-2-1 & 1-2-1, similar to SWISS A333/343.
